Janet, NY asks:

Does it matter very much which brand of sunscreen I use?

Annie: Wow. Does it ever. An analysis by the Environmental Working Group of 785 suncreen products with an SPF of 15 or higher found that only 16 percent of them were made of safe ingredients and offered adequate protection from the sun's harmful rays! Find out how your sunscreen fared by using this internet tool from EWG: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens/summary.php

I live in Mexico city, and wear sunscreen (SPF-30) everyday. Would you please recommend me an organic one that I can get down here?

Jason and other natural companies are better than conventional, but you still must be careful and know your ingredients! Not all natural products are free from harmful synthetic and petrochemical ingredients. The environmental working group's cosmetic database website is an invaluable tool for determining if the ingredients in your sunscreen and other products are truly safe. Annie listed the link above- I highly encourage everyone to utilize this database! It's surprising just how many "natural" products, by companies that we trust, use synthetic ingredients. We use Badger sunscreen and it works great. It's rating, based on ingredient safety, is very good on EWG's database. Blessings to all!

Using mineral sunscreens (not chemical) is especially important for kids! Green Healthy Baby has all their sunscreens on sale- and they're really affordable (some natural sunscreens are REALLY expensive). My favorite is Jason's. www.greenhealthybaby.com

what about coconut oil? i hear that incorporating it into your diet as well as a topical application can be a great sunscreen, though i haven't had a chance to try it yet. i believe this is used in the phillipines where the skin cancer rate is very low considering the amount of sun exposure.

I love Better Basics for the Home! We have made a few of the shampoos and they are great, but by teenage daughters want a thicker gel like consistency. Is there something I can add to the shampoo recipes to thicken them alittle? Thanks

Thankyou Annie

Wow, I had no idea. I'll be way more careful from now on.
