11 Tips for Exercising Regularly

By Gretchen Rubin, DivineCaroline via The Happiness Project

Exercise is one of the keys to happiness. Research shows that people who exercise are healthier, more energetic, think more clearly, sleep better, and have delayed onset of dementia. They get relief from anxiety and mild depression, comparable to medication and therapy. They perform better at work.

Also, although it’s tempting to flop down on the couch when you’re feeling exhausted, exercise is actually a great way to boost energy levels. Feeling tired is a reason to exercise, not a reason to skip exercise.

But even when you admit that you’d feel better if you exercised, it can be very hard to adopt the habit. My idea of fun has always been to lie in bed and read, preferably while also eating a snack, but I’ve managed to keep myself exercising by using all these tricks on myself:

1. Always exercise on Monday. This sets the psychological pattern for the week. Along those lines …

2. If at all possible, exercise first thing in the morning. As the day wears on, you’ll find more excuses to skip exercising. Get it checked off your list, first thing.

I find that sharing my commitment with friends and having a friendly competition with them (to see who can exercise all 7 days of a week, or what not) is really motivating to me. In fact there's this new app that came out called "You're On!" where you can share and complete challenges with facebook friends that I started using to help me with my exercise goals. You can check it out here:

I just need to make myself walk one mile everyday and work up to 2 miles after a couple of weeks. i need a excercise partner though...and please don't say get a dog...not going to happen, we have a cat and live in an apartment.

I catch up with my family while I'm on my walk, I have a bluetooth and I talk with them. It makes the time go faster. My sister will even go for a walk while I'm on the phone with her too... she lives 4 hours away from me, but we can encourage each other to exercise that way...

I find that listening to my ipod while exercising makes me go for longer! It's boring without music, in my opinion anyway.

All this may be true, but you know what the worst thing for me is? Being in a society that is not as happy as me, sometimes its lonely and it can make me feel left out and not understood unless they exercise themselves.
