13 Affirmations to Improve Your Health

Science is starting to prove the wisdom of Stuart Smalley. An affirmation like Stuart’s can be a very powerful tool for not only improving self-esteem, but also for helping us stick to healthier habits and encourage weight loss. Most of us already know that we have the power to change our health, but it can still be tough to stick to those good habits. And that’s where affirmations can help. While never a panacea or a quick fix, research shows that regular redirection of negative thinking into positive statements, aka affirmations, can not only improve our mood, but also our overall health outcomes. Affirmations have also been shown to decrease daily stress levels, and who doesn’t need that?

How do you feel when you are healthy, fit and strong? Continual visualization of ourselves in this “wished for” state will actually increase our endorphins, and we will start to see ourselves in a new light. A study from 2006 shows that when we visualize ourselves in a future, ideal state, and then put that into words, we feel better and are better able to achieve our goals.

How to use Affirmations: Choose a few that resonate with you and that you can easily remember. Most people find it helpful to write down favorites and keep them in a notebook, or place them in prominent positions like your car or refrigerator. (My own bathroom mirror contains way too many post-it notes!)

If we can offer up these affirmations when we are flowing with positive and good mental energy, like after a meditation session, time spent in nature, a long run, or even just a few deep breaths, then they can be even more powerful. It’s also great to repeat the affirmations to yourself first thing in the morning, when your conscious mind hasn’t fully woken up and been inundated with work, kids and obligations.

Sample Affirmations for Health and Weight Loss:

1. I am powerful, strong, and lean.

2. My legs/back/neck move freely and easily. I enjoy running/jumping/walking/swimming, using my powerful legs/back/neck.

3. I am thankful for all of the amazing things that my body can do.

4. I feel radiant, healthy energy in every cell of my body.

5. I choose to eat foods that nourish my body.

6. I consistently make the right choices for my health and well-being.

7. I exercise in ways that are fun and nurturing for my body.

8. I schedule and make the time for my exercise routines.

9. I appreciate and celebrate my beautiful body.

10. I am thankful for this body, which has given me so many amazing and wonderful experiences.

Want to write your own?

1. Make it a positive, feel-good statement. Instead of “I want to be thin,”Ě try “I celebrate my beautiful and radiant body.”

2. Experiment with using questions instead of statements. According to research, questions may allow us more creativity in our answers to ourselves, a way for our subconscious to determine a better way forward. For instance, try asking: “How do I find fun ways to eat healthy foods today?” or “Why do I enjoy eating healthy foods?”

However you choose to use affirmations, either by writing your own or using those listed here, each time a negative thought comes up, you can replace it with an affirmation. And then you’re on your way to feeling better! How do you use affirmations for health?
