15 More Crazy Things About Vaginas

My post “15 Crazy Things About Vaginas” was so freakiní popular, it got 2.5 million hits in one day and spread virally around the internet, generating so much traffic that it crashed OwningPink.com! Apparently, people are really curious about vaginas, so I sorted through my book Whatís Up Down There? Questions Youíd Only Ask Your Gynecologist If She Was Your Best Friend, and I pulled out 15 more crazy things about vaginas.

Remember, the more we know, the more we can learn to love, honor, and respect the part of our body that brings life into the world. Enjoy!

15 More Crazy Things About Vaginas

The almighty clitoris is shaped sort of like a wishbone. The little hot button we all know and love is just the tip of the clitoral iceberg, and the Oh-Oh-Oh spot (aka, the G-spot) is probably where the vagina rubs up against the legs (crura) of the clitoris. So just like a woman, thereís more to a clitoris than what you see on the surface. So make a wish, baby!

When your mother taught you to eat your veggies, she was onto something. Vegetables high in chlorophyll, like wheatgrass, parsley, and celery, are reputed to make vaginas smell and taste sweeter, as are fruits and spices like cinnamon, peppermint, and cardamom.

The average vagina gets it on with four lifetime sexual partners. Keep in mind that 25% of women have only one lifetime sexual partner and 9% have more than 15, so it varies widely. (In case youíre curious, the average penis has seven lifetime sexual partners.)In folktales and myths, some women have vaginas with teeth that can cut off a penis. But vagina dentata, the vagina with teeth, is more than a myth. Some vaginas acquire dermoid cysts which can contain within them — yup, you guessed it — teeth. But donít worry, dudes. While some vaginas can, in fact, have teeth, they wonít be pulling a Lorena Bobbitt on you

Female ejaculation most commonly occurs with manual stimulation of the G-spot with a finger pressing hard in a come hither motion. And apparently, it can be learned. One woman told me she couldnít ejaculate until she knew the possibility existed. Another bisexual woman swears she can make any woman ejaculate. (A few women in the workshop I was leading volunteered to let her prove it!) Read more about exploring the mystical G-spot here.

Itís possible to have two vaginas. In fact, you can have two cervixes and two uteruses too. Double the pleasure! Itís called uterine didelphys, and itís a birth defect caused when the Mullerian ducts donít fuse normally when youíre a fetus.

In some African cultures, women weight their labia minora (inner lips) to stretch them and make them longer. In fact, one womanís two labia, when spread out like a fan, spanned nine inches! So if you have long labia, consider yourself extra blessed.

Pubic hair may not be the same color as the hair on your head. While in some people, the carpet matches the drapes, so to speak, thatís not the case for everyone. The presence of two distinct hair colors in the same person is called heterochromia.

In some cultures, female genital mutilation is routinely performed on young girls, during which the clitoris is removed, the labia are cut off and the vagina is sewn shut, allowing only a matchstick sized hole to remain so menstrual blood can get through. Itís a barbaric practice and needs to be stopped — so please, women of the world, learn to love your bodies the way they were born and stop the madness.

Some women are born with their hymens shut (imperforate hymen). These girls usually donít know until they get their first period and the hymen swells up into a water balloon full of menstrual blood. But itís easy to fix.

Hermaphrodites (the PC term is now ďintersexĒ) really do exist. You deliver the baby and Mama asks, ďIs it a boy or a girl?Ē And thereís dead silence because nobody can tell. So if youíre tempted to make fun of hermaphrodites, donít. Itís a real problem and these people need your compassion, not your judgment.

Male to female post sex change transsexuals donít need Pap smears. Although they may have a surgically constructed vagina, they donít have a cervix, and Pap smears screen for cervical cancer.

When you do a vaginal exam, the cervix feels very much like a nose with a hole in it.

The average glans of the clitoris (the hot button part of it) measures 0.13 inches wide and 0.21 inches long. (And yes, one researcher did pull out a ruler to determine this handy dandy little fact.) 5% of women have a clitoral glans smaller than 0.10 inches, 75% measure between 0.1 and 0.26 inches, and 20 percent measure between 0.26 and 0.59 inches.

Some women have vaginas so large that they need a speculum nearly as big as your forearm in order to get a Pap smear. (We gynecologists lovingly call it Big Bertha.) If youíre one of those women who needs Big Bertha, embrace it! Thereís just more of you to love.

So there you go! The best compliment anyone gave me while I was on my 20 city book tour for Whatís Up Down There? was this: ďLissa, Eve Ensler started the Vagina Monologues. You started the Vagina Dialogues!Ē

So please, talk about vaginas. If youíve experienced traumas there, prioritize healing them. Get out of your own way and start rocking this life by getting to know this part of yourself. And if youíre a guy — learn to respect this special part of a womanís anatomy. And keep the conversation going. Share this post with your friends. The more we know, the more empowered we will be.
