15 Things You Should Know About Your Cat

Cats have been popular companion animals for thousands of years, yet they continue to carry that air of mystery about them that dogs just do not. Below is a list of feline facts that will shed a little light (or fur!) on Felis silvestris catus – that seemingly half-domesticated, half-wild little lion prowling around your house.

  • Most cat owners know this instinctively, but it has also been scientifically proven that petting a cat can lower a person’s blood pressure.
  • A healthy cat’s body temperature is between 100.5 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. A cat is ill if its temperature dips below 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above 103 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The hairless cat breed known as the Spynx is a very young breed. If you have a Spynx cat, he or she can be traced back to a hairless kitten born in Toronto, Canada in 1966.
  • A cat’s jaws are designed to only chew up and down, but not sideways like human and dog jaws.

  • Cats do not develop a sweet tooth because they basically cannot taste sweet.
  • Most cats dislike water immensely, but not the Savannah breed. This cat breed acts very dog-like in its love of water, as well as its willingness to be leash-walked and taught to fetch.
  • Persians are the divas of cats (which is saying a lot!) and thus it may not surprise you that Persians originated in Persia (Iran) and were smuggled out of the kingdom on camels, nestled among baskets of exotic spices, silks and jewels.
  • The outer ear of cat has 32 muscles which allows the cat the rotate each ear 180 degrees – and independently from one another.
