15 Toxic Ingredients in Personal Care

posted by Mel, selected from Natural Solutions magazine Nov 9, 2009 5:02 pm

By now we’ve all heard that everything from hair serum to sunscreen can be teeming with troublesome toxins and crazy chemicals, and many concerned consumers already steer clear of products made with parabens, phthalates, and synthetic scents and colors. But there are hundreds of lesser-known ingredients hidden in many favorite products–some with the potential to wreak havoc on the environment and others that have been linked to breast cancer. Without a universal and enforceable natural or organic standard to regulate the beauty industry, even companies claiming to be natural often produce products laced with not-so-clean stuff.

For their 2nd Annual Beauty with a Conscience Awards, Natural Solutions magazine put its stamp of approval on 101 of the purest and best personal care products using guidelines developed in collaboration with Whole Foods Market, here is their list of the toxic ingredients that you don’t want in your products.

I am not aware of any scientific research proving that petrolatum-based products clog pores. Many well-known brands contain them (Johnson's baby oil contains fragrance and mineral oil) but those products don't absorb easily ie they can be greasy. That is probably why high-end companies don't use them. And mineral oil is natural - it's distilled from naturally occurring oil.
Synthetic doesn't always equal bad, natural doesn't always equal good. (and no I don't work for any cosmetics companies!)

It can be so hard to find truely safe product. This is a good list to help though.

Do this simple exercise on a few of the personal care products you and your loved ones use on an everyday basis.
The product is described as containing "natural" herbal extracts.

Just goes to show how little regulation there is in our so-called "safe" products and how we need to rely on ourselves. I am appalled that most people never read the ingredients of what they are using and then won't listen to any information that abuses their notion of safety.

Everything is just chemicals. Why are ones synthesized by a plant better than one synthesized by a scientist? At least the scientist is required to perform safety testing. The plant extracts are often not FDA tested at all!

I use Nature gates, EO, Jason, OMG! Tomorrow I will give away does products, because I am trying to become pregnant and I want to use organic.I am going to make sure my next products are certifed. I do use Dr. Bronners and my hubby love it specially that mint smell and almond love it. You can find it now almost every place, 6 years ago you can only by then on healthfood store. Am happy that now we do have a list of does bad chemicals and does fake organic product.

Duane, you make some excellent points. I am as allergic to the Aveda products (as much as I LOVE the fragrances, etc,) as I am to regular drugstore products. Each one of us is so different. It truly is a "buyer beware" world. And you put it in perspective regarding risks from other sources.
