25 Easy Homemade Gift Ideas

posted by Megan Zehnder Nov 14, 2009 3:05 pm

Once Thanksgiving rolls around here in the United States, I like to try and stay as far away from any malls or large shopping centers. The stress from the traffic and crowds almost matches the stress from seeing greed and consumerism at its peek.

But even though going to malls to buy gifts is not my favorite, I still love the idea of gift-giving. So what better way to remedy this, then to spend time at home to make my own gifts? Homemade gifts are not only cheaper and greener than store-bought gifts, they are also often more personal and meaningful.

Don’t feel intimidated by the idea of having to make a gift yourself—these twenty-five ideas are easy for anyone to create. Chances are, your loved ones will be very impressed and thankful that you took the time to create their gifts by hand.

Gifts from the Kitchen:

Homemade food treats are always an excellent choice. Who doesn’t enjoy receiving homemade candy or other sweet kitchen treats? Be sure to include a tag describing what ingredients are in your treats to prevent feeding your recipients ingredients they are allergic to.

For the health-conscious among your friends, try making Mel’s fabulous recipe for granola. A vegan-version is included.

For those sweet-teethed friends, try one of the following homemade candies:

-Homemade Maple Magic Candy
-Pull Taffy
-Pumpkin Seed Crackle Recipe
-Sea Salt Caramels

Too many sweets? Try more gifts on the following pages!

These gift ideas are really cool. I will defiantly use some of them for gift ideas. Some of them are also good to make for yourself.

The most beautiful gifts are the ones being hand-made, because this way everybody realizes how much you care...it´s easy to go, spend money & buy a gift, but taking the afford to create something- made with love- is a real tressure! Thanks for turning me on to do some of it...BYE!

This seems like a lot of work for the giftee – especially separating out all the layers to prepare.I would give this to people who REALLY love to bake or maybe someone I’m mad at...

For the past two years, I gave my older daughter hand-knitted scarves to wear in the winter time (she walks to school, and here in the mountains of western MD, it gets COLD in the early mornings!). This year, I'm giving her, my sister, my mom, and my youngest niece handmade jewelry. If I can get the hang of the sewing machine in time, I might make a "pioneer style" dress for my oldest daughter (she loves those conservative styles, to the point where she once asked me to make her a dress "just like the Mennonites wear."). Once both kids are in "big girl" beds (my younger daughter is only 2 1/2, so she's got a ways to go yet), I'm going to make them both quilts for their beds as well. I also plan to make them large knitted throws as well, but that's going to wait until they're both old enough to know that those are for wrapping up in, not horsing around in or dragging all over the house!

And by the way, the cloth for the dresses and quilts was inexpensive-they were lucky finds at local yard sales!
