5 Ways to Soothe Sore Muscles


4. Take a Hot Bath… Or a Cold One.

For decades, professional athletes have sworn by ice baths as a treatment for injuries — and the research backs up their claims. If you can muster up the courage after a particularly strenuous workout, draw yourself a bath at a temperature between 54 and 59 degrees and stay in it for up to 5 minutes. You can also, of course, soak in a hot bath, which will also provide some relief — though perhaps not as much.

5. Alternate Hot and Cold.

Alternating 15 minutes of an ice pack and 15 minutes of a heat pack is a great way to promote your circulation and help with recovery. Always start with the heat pack and end with the ice pack.

One thing not mentioned in the article, add Epsom salt to the hot bath. Magnesium will be absorbed through the skin and sooth your sore body. Sure would like to have the massage to go along with it!!!!!

I take m agnesium tablets, I drink water as well to keep my muscles hydrated and me too and I use Eucalyptus oil and massage it into my sore muscles. Its brilliant and it grows madly in Australia but Im sure you can get it where you live. Keep your muscles warm or do the cold/warm treatment and keep moving dont sit or stop b/c then the problem escalates.

I go to the gym and i just go gently around and ease into it. Hot showers are my thing too. Bliss as well as acupressure/reflexology/massage...bliss if you can find a good one

Lisa's point about magnesium is well-taken. Recently added it to my daily vitamin regimen. Also, I've just learned about the benefits of horse chestnut - aid circulation in legs. I take it with 1000 mg vitamin C. In truthfulness, it's too soon for me to know if it makes a difference.

I think an important way to soothe - or even prevent - muscle soreness is by getting enough magnesium. There used to be plenty in the soil, which plants soak up and we get when we eat the plants. but soils are pretty depleted now, even when organic. Taking mg supplements can even be tricky, because the body may only absorb a small percentage of them. What I have found to work wonders is either taking epsom salts baths or making a spray with mg bath flakes and water (called magnesium oil) and spritzing it on my arms and legs every morning. The mg oil is easy to make; warm a half cup water and add a half cup of the mg bath flakes. stir until the flakes have dissolved. Pour into a spray bottle and it is ready to use! I compete in obstacle course races and noticed a marked difference in recovery after I incorporated this transdermal method into my daily routine. It is much less time consuming than taking a bath.
