6 Alternatives to Toxic Deodorants

  • 2 of 4

You can say no to toxin-laced deodorants and still stay sweet smelling by choosing products that rely on more natural (and side effect-free) ingredients such as these safe alternatives:

Mineral salts
Ammonium or potassium alum, the ingredients in solid crystal deodorants, work by constricting the protein in sweat so that malodorous bacteria have less to feed on.

Clay and powders
Clay minerals such as kaolin and bentonite and natural powders like cornstarch or arrowroot help absorb moisture.

Witch hazel, sage, alcohol, and other astringents work by evaporating the moisture on the skin and constricting the pores. They are usually used in conjunction with essential oils that have antibacterial properties.

Here is an article I found that goes into great detail about the toxic chemicals in deodorants and has an extensive list of the healthier natural alternatives on the market.

Thanks for sharing - I use Simple - deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, face creams etc. and fragrance free washing powder, washing up liquid and fabric conditioner. My allergies are under control, but some of the products do have parabens in, which concerns me.

My family uses purebodyscent deodorants which are free of all of the toxins above and do not contain hydrogenated oils which are found in lots of deodorants. This brand is extremely effective. My aunt has hyperhidrosis and this was the only deodorant that worked for her.

I stopped using deodorants, after shave, shaving cream. I use only soap, tooth paste and sometimes perfume on my clothes only. I use almost no detergent, I find balm for washing machine useless, just a stupid comfort idea, also the same for hair balm. I will buy every one of these but organic once I'll get a good job in a couple of months. Also it's important the place where you live. I live in The Netherlands where the humidity is high and the temperature rarely goes higher than 28 degrees Celsius. I don't sweat often(unless I do some sports but that is a different case) and I ate 90% organic food in the last 6 months. I asked people around me if I smell bad, nobody believed that I don't use any of that stuff anymore haha (I have a girlfriend). And btw, now I cannot go inside a perfume shop or cosmetic shop, it's far too smelly, too artificial so my senses are awaken :). Go organic and clean! My next step is to incorporate water filter in the water system from the house. Also every bottle that I use is glass-based; no plastic, no aluminium. Only the plastic keyboard which is a Lenovo Thinkpad one, so good plastic combined with glass-fiber and carbon-fiber. These small details count. I want to be a model for my children in the way that I can show to them face-to-face and not make them to read my history.

I use Thai Cristal and have used the Origins one (which I think it is pretty darn good but refuse to pay that much for it). I read another article that gave two do it yourself deodorant and I think I am going to go for it!
