8 Tips to Become a Morning Person

You donít have to naturally be an early bird to become one. Make the following changes to your daily routine and environment and give yourself a little time to adjust and you, too, can be one who effortlessly gets the proverbial worm.

1. Go to bed early.

Yes, itís a given, but itís important enough to emphasize; in order to wake up early and feel refreshed, you must go to bed early enough to get a full nightís sleep. Additionally, you should make your bedtime consistent every night in order to create a pattern that you will instinctively follow if repeated long enough.

2. Wake up at the same time every day.

Just as too little sleep makes you tired, too much sleep does the same thing. Plus, if you donít create a pattern for your body to follow, it will resist your early-bird intentions. Wake up at the same time every day, including weekends, until your body adjusts and ultimately, you may not need a wake-up call at all.

3. Get a relentless alarm clock.

The yin to the above tipís yang, you arenít likely to get up early if you can perpetually hit the snooze button. Find a fool-proof way to make sure you wake when you are supposed toówithout delayóand youíre on your way to morning person status.

4. Donít drink caffeine or excessive alcohol in the evening.

All your good intentions will be foiled if you drink the wrong beverages. Caffeine obviously keeps you perky, which is great up until the time youíre ready to go to sleep. Donít drink any after noon, especially when youíre starting out your new routine, to give you better snoozing odds. Alcohol, too, can foil best-laid sleeping plans. It may help you get groggy, but later it disrupts sleep, causing exhaustion that lingers into the next day.

5.† Exercise in the early evening.

While exercise gets the heart rate going and boosts energy, it also helps you get seriously restful sleepóso long as you give yourself enough winding-down time after your workout. Break a sweat right after work and youíll have plenty of time to get groggy before bedtime. Bonus: It helps eliminate the stress that might keep your mind busy when it should be snoozing.

6. Eat healthy early evening meals.

Food hangovers happen all the time. In fact, most of us are suffering from one at any given time. Unfortunately, the kind of foods you eat can disrupt sleep, too. While youíre not likely to change your diet just to accommodate sleep, you can and should eat on the early side so your body isnít overwhelmed trying to digest and dream.

7. Prepare for your day the night before.

Being a morning person doesnít have to mean you bound out of bed and whiz around. Any sleepy shortcomings you have can be overcome with some advance planning. Get your coffee at the ready, lay out your wardrobe for the day, and make your lunch the night before. Then youíll have less to do as you drowsily get into your new routine.

8. Reconfigure your bedroom for optimal sleep.

Sleep experts everywhere recommend that you make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. That means you should keep stimulating distractions, such as the TV, smartphone, or computer, out of the bedroom and focus solely on soothing things that are conducive to getting your snooze on.

I'm a morning person but would like to get up earlier. Why don't I? Addiction to this Care2 site so there is always one more topic to read...and then I catch sight of the clock! ;)

I am like Shan D.- someone whio becomes most productive laterat night instead of early in the morning. Unfortunately I have an 8 am to 3 pm job that makes me be up at least at 7 every morning and get going no matter I want it or not. Last night I had the gratest sleep ever- slept 5 hours without waking up and then a couple more just because I went to bed knowing I had a long busy day (double the usual one) and din all the best I could for it, and, what was more important, I knew I'd have a day off today when I can sleep as long aas I need (not want, NEED) without alarm set to wake me up.

I am not convinced all those things would help. I strongly believe it's in humans nature if he's a morning or evening person and it's not natural to try to force things turn around.

Kathy, you're not alone. 3 or 4 I faint in bed to get up early to teach or working daily house affairs and family issues. If I get in bed I don't sleep. I'm working in getting 15 minutes earlier. Maybe I reach the 11:00 time.

my biggest issue is that i am a morning person AND a night owl. i hit a slump around 3 or 4.. just super fatigued. I have a two year old, and he stay up with us.. usually till about 9 or 10. i stay up till 1am or so... me time, dish washing, crocheting or reading, laundry folding. All that is hard to do with a wild toddler. The He wakes up between 8 am and 9am, I get 7 hours or less but wake up well. happy. Energetic. Then at 3 or 4 my energy is shot, but returns with a second wind around 6 or so.

I am a morning purrson, here it is four in the morning and am still up while the cat that owns me is sleeping contently in the kitchen. She has many plush beds but occasionally likes the cool floor in the heat waves we are having this and every summer.

Often sleep through the mornings when many people are waking up at seven or eight in the morning. My system is that of a Night Owl or a nocturnal cat, (the one owning me is sixteen year old so she gets extra sleep when she can). Enjoy your day or night sleep in the way that is natural for you!

If I became a morning person I would be in mourning because I love to sleep in and stay up as a Night Owl in the Wee Small Hours of the Morning! Purrs!

Good ideas but they never worked for me even when following them for morning employment. Am just one of those Night Owls who no matter how much sleep I get just am not refreshed in the early hours of the morning. My ideal jobs were when working from two p.m. til late. Suited my night owl ways purrfectly! I do know some people who are energized and raring to go at six in the morning but that will never be me!

The only thing I actually do is to not have coffee in the evening. I'm working on going to bed early and turning off all distractions. But once in awhile I get my emails on the cellphone in bed.
