A DIY Cutting Board with Hipster Flair

Ikea’s Swedish blog Livet Hemma is indisputably clever. At Remodelista, we spotted this latest DIY project: a DIY wooden cutting board with leather hanging cord. Here’s how to get the look:

Above: You can accessorize a cutting board by looping, twisting, or nailing a piece of leather strapping or cording to it. Some of these decorations double as hangers.

Above: Use a Leather Hole Punch Tool to make holes; $6.89 via Amazon. (Or get your local shoe repair shop to punch the holes for you.)

Above: Furniture nails and rivets can be sourced from any hardware store.

Above: A pair of Genuine Leather Straps (1/2 inch wide and 20 inches long in total); $12 from Cocosheaven via Etsy.

Above: Natural Leather Cord (2 millimeter wide, 5 yards long) is $3.49 from Hempbeadery via Etsy.

Above: Real Flat Leather Cord (10 millimeter wide, 3 feet long); $3.29 from Basic Pretty Supplies via Etsy.

Above: The Proppmätt Chopping Board is $2.99 from Ikea. Leather cording can be wrapped around the handle.

Above: The Architec Gripper Wood Hardwood Cutting Board is $14.99 from Amazon. A leather strap can be affixed to the top of the board.

At Remodelista, we have a weakness for a good looking, cutting board. You, too? Check out our posts DIY: Pastel-Painted Cutting Boards and 10 Easy Pieces: Display-worthy Chopping Boards.

Interesting ideas, but I find wood is hard to sterilize, generally use lemon juice to do so. Thanks.

Don't really need anything fancy for cutting...only Need something that can be deep cleaned, sterilized because of possible food contamination.

I prefer my glass cutting board .... a wooden one is more difficult to keep clean
