Adapted from The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire by Deepak Chopra (Harmony Books, 2003).

You must transform yourself into the person for whom the probability of great things happening increases. And this transformation starts at the level of the soul. The soul gives meaning to events. The soul takes actions by influencing our minds. And for every action, there is a memory, an interpretation. Meaning, experience, interpretation, memory, desire–all of these are very closely connected through the karmic cycle.

We get used to a certain way of doing things and continue that pattern out of habit, simply because it is comfortable. In order to change your life, you have to find a way to break the pattern. This is not easy, but people do it every day. The best way is to watch for signs of new probabilities—-and those signs come to us in the form of coincidences.

Coincidences are messages from the nonlocal domain, invitations to break our karmic bonds. Coincidences invite us to relinquish the known and embrace the unknown. A coincidence is a creative, quantum leap in the behavior of the universe itself. Since the known is itself a habit of past conditioning, creativity and freedom exist in the unknown—-anything that breaks through the probability amplitude set by karma. That is why it is important to look for coincidences, to keep a record of them. When you notice coincidences, you can discover their hidden meanings for your life.

A coincidence is, by definition, a synchronistic experience. It affects our world in unpredictable ways. The very fact that it is a coincidence means that it is a message from God. We must take heed and then take action. This is our opportunity for a creative response.

I had an experience with coincidence recently that was very empowering, and greatly needed.
I am going through recovery from deep-seated codendency/love addiction. I ended a 5 year relationship in late 2008, which was followed by 2 unhealthy rebounds - one with a 'recovering' meth addict and one with a person who claimed to be a spiritual hands-on healer (he was very disrespectful, controlling and manipulative, and seemed quite far from peaceful or in touch with humanity-it ended when he had a dramatic blow up and disrespected me in my home). I was reading Codependant No More when my phone rang. It was the hands-on healer, whom I hadn't spoken to in a month. He acted like nothing happened and wanted to watch a movie. I asked why he called, and he became dramatic again, and tried to pin the drama on me as he had in the past. I was speaking calmly with almost no inflection in my voice. He shouted, 'is that what you're all about?! drama?!' I calmly responded, 'no, I'm all about ELIMINATING the drama' and hung up on him. Okay, hanging up on him might have been dramatic... I'll own that. I started feeling like I should apologize, like I disrupted my karmic balance by treating him that way (an old way of thinking for me). I had to remind myself that it was a strong move that was needed to affirm to myself my self-worth, and perhaps it would enlighten him to the matters he needs to address in his own life. I hope so. I do not like to hurt others, but I had to stop hurting myself.

I've just recently been more intune with coincidences and want to share one that happened last week. I've gone through a very hard time in the last year but have recently been turning things around and feeling better. However, Wednesday evening, after having a tough day, I was doing the 'negative head-talk.' You know, the "here we go again," "can't you get anything right." Very negative stuff. In the middle of all this, I decided I NEEDED to shutdown my computer and just before doing that decided I should read the daily teachings I get everyday. I hadn't read it for two days. Well, the teaching for that day was how to overcome negative headtalk! I read it through, did what was suggested (which was to simply think about things that make me feel good) and voila, I was was able to overcome all those negatiave messages I was sending myself.

Recently I've frequently noticed that when I needed a message to help me through everything, it's been there. Maybe they always were but I just didn't notice them before.

I have always believed that coincidences were really disguised messages from God and that they should never be ignored. They are opportunities to change something in your life and force you to make some kind of decision - for better or worse and they are sent to challenge our reaction.

Semantics can really be a "trip".
"Synchroniistic experience", "a message from God". Well, I believe all these things happen. But, I do not agree that either should be labeled "coincidence". For me, a message from God is Divine Revelation, and "synchronistic experience" is something that sort of "goes along with the territory". Perhaps, were my viewpoints a little different, my response to this article would be somewhat more connected.

For me a coincidence is information that seems to come just when I need it. It could be through a person, a book which seems to jump off the shelves at me in a book store, something I see on TV which grabs my attention, but it is always accompanied by a strong sense of increased energy - a sort of feeling of excitement - a sort of tingly warm feeling especially around the heart chakra.

I'd like to add...the more you LET GO of the past, the more room you leave for coincidences to come in to your presence. LET GO, LET GO, then LET GO some more.

in love

I really like Deepak Chopra's definition of a 'coincidence', when he says it is a 'message from God'. Most people seem to shrug off coincidences. This article and interpretation may make us think otherwise.

Jillian Fernandez

I don't believe in coincidences. I think everything happens is because it is meaned to happen. What we have to do is to interpret these so-called coincidences for good or for bad. It is the way we deal with the outome that counts.

The coincidence IS the guidance. As Deepak said, "The very fact that it is a coincidence means that it is a message from God."

Kristy E.

i'm not sure i understand the "coincidence". can someone try to explain it to me? is it as simple as just thinking "oh, what a coincidence?" Someone having a similar background, thought, an incident that happens at just the right time? and no matter how small it seems you should listen and ask for guidance?
