Acai Berry, Trendy Fruit or Wonder Food?

Q: What do you think about this new wonder food, the acai berry? Is it all it’s cracked up to be?

A: My goodness. I just got an e-mail from my mom the other day asking if the acai berry could help her lose those last 3 pounds. My answer to her was this: No.

Acai berry is the latest trendy fruit. Like many other fruits, it is high in antioxidants and fiber and has health benefits related to these factors. There’s no substantial research to support any of the claims that it is a “miracle fruit.”

That being said, any time something new and trendy comes out that makes people more interested in eating fruit, I’m all for it.

I have taken Mona Vie with the Acai berry in it and I think it is wonderful! Mona Vie doesn't claim to make you lose weight, but it does make you feel good and have more energy. Which in turn will help you lose weight because you are doing more.

General rule of thumb: If it's heavily advertised, it's a gimmick! The fruits are nutritious & have anti-oxidants, but really...a pill that can make you lose pounds of fat just because it has a particular berry? Ina way I feel sorry for people who keep falling for this. But instead they should be focusing on a good detox from a trusted source (IE-Doctor of Natural Medicine, Nutritionist) & healthy, nutritious eating. When will we stop being sheep?

I was born and live in the land of the Açaí (Belém-Pará-Brazil.People here drink this wonder and delicious fruit every day at lunch time. It´s not a fruit to lose weight. It´s a nutrient and energetic fruit. Also antioxidant and good for heart health, among others benefits according to doctors opinions

I'd be willing to bet that blueberries or elderberries are just as good for you. Blueberries have already been tapped as high nutrient fruit, so... "This is your assignment, should you care to accept..." Develop a way of gathering and preserving elderberries in a sustainable manner.

The benefits of Acai berry is in question in my mind. tryed it, didn't work. Was charged $87 for 1 mo. supply. People! do research before buying--FOR me that amount was alot!

The only test(s) I found published were on "Freeze-Dried" Acai appearing in the "Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry" starting in 2006'. Pills are a joke...Acai is best consumed as juice that has been freeze-dried and flash pasteurized. There are 3 or 4 books out on Acai. It's ORAC score does blow away every other fruit and vegetable tested to date on a gram for gram basis. Some companies are now adding synthetic vitamin C and E to artificially increase their ORAC value. This makes it more difficult to find the few great products among the deceivers.
