There’s no question Americans love their sugar. In 1822, the average American consumed about 45 grams of sugar every five days, or roughly the equivalent of one modern day soda. Today, we ingest seventeen times that amount, or a whopping three pounds a week. Added sugar alone accounts for nearly 500 calories a day, the caloric equivalent of 10 strips of bacon. Find out more interesting facts about our scary addiction in this eye-opening infographic.

Humans naturally crave things that taste good, and sweet things taste good. I have gone for several years without eating processed food with no added sugar, and have ingested only natural sugar, that was when I was in high school, then I ate a candy bar with added sugar and it was sickening, but once I had that bite I could not stop myself from craving more. Processed sugar is additive and humans crave sweet. I graduated in 2007, I have been weaning myself off processed items with added sugar, which is getting harder as everything is getting sugar added, and have even replaced much of my sugar in baking with natural sweeteners or raw sugars that have not been processed and refined. Because of that I hardly bake sweets any more (too much for my already pricey food bill for a household of different allergies) and save them for special occasions, such as, but not limited to, holidays and birthdays.
