Animal Adoption Encouraged by Rock Star

Animal Adoption Encouraged by Rock Star

Tommy Lee, of Motley Crue fame recently adopted a new puppy and in the process revealed his views on buying from pet stores.

“The [shelter] is scary. It is loaded with beautiful dogs and I would highly† encourage people not to buy animals from a pet store. They’re bred for all the wrong reasons, for mostly money and it’s just kind of a bad scene. We ended up going [to the shelter] and Iím so glad we did,” he said. (Source: Rolling Stone)

He was referencing an overall situation which is very bad for many animals. According to No Pet Store Puppies, most puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills – large-scale breeding operations that place profits over animal care. Conditions in puppy mills can be atrocious and even disease-spreading. Housing female dogs in small cages as breeders is a very cruel practice. Also too many of the puppies get sick in these confined spaces where they are treated like objects and often neglected.

Once sick, they may die or be abandoned which results in death. Some sick puppies actually make it to pet stores where unwitting customers buy them and then have to get treatment or they remain sick and die.Once the female dogs cease to breed prolifically they are shot, left to starve or abandoned.

To make matters worse there are millions of animals which could be adopted. In 2008, there were an estimated 3.7 million animals euthanized in the United States.

In Detroit alone, there are an estimated 20,000-50,000 stray dogs roaming the streets. Some of these dogs were abandoned by their owners who left the city or can’t afford to feed them. In a single LA neighborhood there are nearly 12,000 stray cats. With so many animals available for adoption, why do people continue buying pets from pet stores?

By adopting a Dog, Tommy has spread awareness, of a trend World wide.
Pet Shops and Puppy Mills have to be closed down
Think of the suffering , then the euthanising of healthy Animals, when so
many could be Adopted, laws must be brought in to stop this cruel practice.
Please ,before buying a pet, go to the Rescue Shelters, they have so many
beautiful Cats and Dogs, starved of affection, and will make a lovely pet.
Help stop this barbaric way of breeding for profit.

Jake Richardson, the writer of this article asks, "With so many animals available for adoption, why do people continue buying pets from pet stores?"

I believe that many people are so materialistic that they think that something (even a pet) can't be worth getting unless it's expensive. The value that directs their actions is money, so a pet cannot be desirable unless you have to pay money (and to them, the more the better) for it. Part of the joy of a rescued pet is knowing that, in many cases, a life has been saved and transformed, which is even better than knowing that such wonderful animals can be had for a bargain price.

Anytime a celebrity uses their fame to help shelter animals is a very good day. Please adopt from shelters and rescue organizations. They animals will thank you for it for the rest of their lives.
