Could bananas be just as bad for you as cookies? In terms of satisfying hunger, the surprising answer is yes. They both rank low on the satiety scale, while having a higher glycemic index (meaning hunger and a “sugar crash” are quicker to follow). When foods have a low glycemic index, they generally make you feel satisfied longer and minimize overeating.
Bananas, however, and all whole fruits, generally have more fiber, potassium and other beneficial nutrients than cookies. Because bananas are relatively higher on the glycemic index, they make a great post-workout snack when your body is craving quick energy and is primed to absorb nutrients.
When looking to satisfy hunger and keep a sustained amount of energy, the following infographic may prove helpful. The bottom line, according to the chart: “If you’re hungry, don’t grab a cookie. Or a banana. Try an orange or an apple.”
