Are Vaccines Safe for Our Cats?

Vaccine-Associated Sarcomas May Occur After Vaccination

Malignant, fatal tumors called fibrosarcomas can be caused by some vaccines in cats. This cancer occurs in the connective tissue. The two vaccines currently implicated are rabies and feline leukemia. A third will undoubtedly be joining the list – the feline AIDS (FIV) vaccine. These three products are all killed vaccines made with adjuvants (substances that increase the immune response). Unfortunately, in cats, this additional response includes inflammation that can lead to the formation of cancer. Even worse, every additional vaccine indeed, some researchers suggest that every additional injection of any kind (antibiotics, steroids, insulin, sedatives, fluids, etc.) may significantly increase the risk of developing cancer, particularly if the injections are given in the same place. At least one vaccine maker has recognized this risk and now makes several vaccines that do not contain adjuvants, using advanced recombinant technology.

When vaccines were given between the shoulder blades, these cancers were inoperable and fatal because they would grow into the spine, ribcage, and chest. This became such a serious problem that it is now recommended to give the rabies vaccine in the right hind leg, and leukemia in the left hind leg so that when a tumor does develop, the whole leg can be amputated and thus the cat’s life can be saved. Do you think vaccinating like this is worth the risk? We take a healthy animal and run the risk of turning it into a double amputee to protect it from a disease it has very little chance of ever getting in the safety of your home?

I must warn that the rabies vaccine (as much as I personally abhor this shot) is required by law for most animals in most jurisdictions because it is said to present a public health hazard. Therefore, it is important from a legal standpoint to follow your jurisdiction’s regulations concerning rabies vaccines for your pets. Killed rabies vaccines are labeled for either one or three years; but the vaccine in the bottle is exactly the same in both cases. The label itself is the only difference. Request that your cat receive the three-year vaccine, only once every three years if you feel forced to do this. You can also consider a nonadjuvanted vaccine. If your vet clinic does not carry it, ask if they will order it, or try to find a vet who does.

In homeopathic medicine, vaccination is considered to cause a chronic condition with multiple symptoms, called vaccinosis. See my Care2 post on the topic of homeopathy for pets.

When faced with the symptoms of vaccinosis, you may not even see it as a sign of illness. Vaccinosis symptoms include laziness, finickyness, poor grooming habits, hairballs, bladder and kidney problems, chronic vomiting or diarrhea, chronic or recurrent upper respiratory infections, increased or displaced sexual behavior, aggression, destructiveness, wool-sucking, pica (eating indigestible items or even their own poop), seizures, excessive licking, hot spots, and over-grooming. The vaccinosis condition can be inherited as well. Each generation will become more and more ill, unless reversed by nutrition and holistic therapies. You will find these appropriate therapies outlined in great detail in my book The Complete Guide to Holistic Cat Care, which I co-wrote with Jean Hofve, DVM.

Although off the topic of feline vaccination, the subject of vaccines for humans and infants especially has been of special concern to me for about 20 years now and I would feel remiss if I did not offer to parents or soon to be parents the following from a recent Natural News Network post by Paul Fassa on the subject of Hepatitis B vaccines and I quote from this article, “Renowned neurosurgeon and author Dr. Russell Blaylock puts it this way: ‘Because the child’s brain is undergoing a period of rapid growth from the third trimester of pregnancy until age 2 years, his or her brain is at considerable risk from this insane policy’ [infant vaccinations]. And continuing, Mr. Fassa offers, ‘The statistical evidence of rapidly rising autism and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) is overwhelming. Yet only five percent of adverse events get reported to the adverse event reporting system (AERS), making it easier for the CDC to claim low risk to benefit vaccine ratios.’”

The more we take the time to research what actually goes into the bodies of those we love the more empowered we become. This is a very worthwhile read!

I contributed an article to Natural News Network also on what to do to minimize the side effects of vaccines which works for both people and pets.

In a nutshell, apply an ice pack to the vaccine site immediately and give a high potency Omega-3 marine lipid, which I suggested above, to ramp down inflammation immediately and thereafter such as Moxxor For more information and excellent material to study or peruse, connect to VacTruth.com

I will be sharing more about the dangers of conventional veterinary care, including vaccination here on Care2 in future Celestial Musing’s posts. See Part 1 in the series here: Examining Feline Vaccination Risks

This is also an excellent presentation on what vaccination is all about: http://tv.naturalnews.com/v.asp?v=9C394B0F9BEE6C8E6AFC9C10A23EBD89

This is an amazing article that interviews a group of veterinarians on their real feelings about vaccination. One of the vets is my writing partner Dr. Jean Hofve, DVM This publication is offering this download for free because they feel it is that important to share it. http://go.epublish4me.com/vets_on_vaccines/10017104

Thanks for the information. Sometimes there is abuse with vaccines applications. This substances lack of regulations even for humans we can expect much for pets. My cats have been healthy without any vaccine and my dogs too.

all of my cats have been rescues, and all received their shots and boosters every other year. After my Cujo died of panleuk (undiagnosed by his shoddy vet after Cujo lost half his body weight) and had to be put to sleep at the age of 7, I stopped getting the rest boosters. And I switched vets.

Although my current vet (brilliant!) is on the fence about boosters, he understands why I refuse them. I have one cat that goes outside so he gets a rabies shot every three years, but that's it. I was convinced from the beginning that Cujo's demise was from the shots. When I told my current vet of Cujo's symptoms, he knew right away it was panleuk. I did exhaustive research on vaccinations and arguments on both sides and I know in my heart it's a mistake.

I've always been on the fence about vaccinations and now even more so.

I have a cat with diabetes and have to inject her with insulin every twelve hours. If not, her health would deteriorate within days. I usually inject her around the scruff as it's very difficult to do it anywhere else. Now I'm worried.

Thank you for your comments, everyone I so appreciate your feed back. You might also enjoy listening to my friend, Catherine O’Driscoll who is the founder of the PPAG (PET PARENTS ACTION GROUP) which I recommend in my post above! Please listen to this wonderful radio broadcast that she has just done on this very subject, (the dangers ofvaccinating dogs and cats annually) on a very popular radio show in the UK! Do help Catherine and I power the PPAG movement forward (Dr.Jean Hofve Dvm and I are the cat correspondents)

I have subscribed to the about.com cats newsletter for years. Last week's "Cat of the Week" photo was a tortie who had her right hind leg amputated due to rabies vaccine related cancer.
My vet does not over-vaccinate (kitten shots plus a one year booster) and only uses the Merial non-adjuvant rabies and leukemia vaccines. I live in a state in which annual rabies vaccines are required - a money maker for the state. Humans don't continue to be vaccinated annually past childhood. Why should cats? I think it is important to vaccinate against panleukopenia (feline distemper) as it has proven to be a safe and effective vaccine, and the disease spreads like wildfire in cat shelters, however, I would never have my cats vaccinated every year! They had their "childhood" vaccines and boosters when they were a year. old.
