During these dog days of summer what could be more refreshing than a thick, chilled slice of watermelon? And since today is 'Watermelon Day' I'd like to share some magical uses of this cooling fruit. In fact, ancient Egyptians mixed watermelon juice with wine and gave this drink to those thought to be possessed by spirits caused by illness. In Hawaii, a watermelon is often rolled out the house through the front door to ease the spirit of someone dearly departed as they make their way to the next world. Clearly, watermelon is considered in many traditions to be a healing fruit, and when eaten with that same intent it can help rejuvenate, restore and repair.
