Be an EcoBroker: Ask Annie

Dear Annie, I am a Realtor and I really want to sell eco-friendly and non-toxic homes, or at least be up on the issues so I can steer families clear of unsafe homes and help them find healthy ones. How do you suggest I get trained? –Sally, MS

Dear Sally,

I am so impressed with your integrity and desire to help families buy healthy homes. It is so important that buyers make educated decisions to avoid often-hidden toxic chemicals such as the pesticide chlordane (removed from the market because it is so neurotoxic and long-lasting), and more. More power to you.

Last weekend I was at the Southern Ideal Home Show in Raleigh, N.C., and met some great Realtors who are certified by Ecobrokers. They have been taught about just exactly the issues you are wishing to learn yourself. I was impressed with the eco-awareness and eco-education of these two EcoBrokers . They were also very equipped at handling energy efficiency evaluations.

You can become an EcoBroker by taking the online curriculum. They currently have thousands of certified EcoBrokers in 49 states.

Note: To those of you on the buyer’s side of the market, look for such a broker to help you find a healthy home.

I am surprised this article got so little response. I think it is great that people are waking up to the need for eco housing and thus eco aware and eco friendly brokers.

Far too many real estate agents and developers are little more than land rapers and could care less about their impact on the environment and our culture.

80% of the energy used in America, and thus roughly the same proportion of greenhouse gasses and pollutants, comes from home energy use. Eco friendly housing and other structures is probably the most important single issue facing the long term sustainability and survivability of our culture and ecosystem.

Yet in general this aspect of the problem facing us all if often ignored because it is not a quick and easy SciFi high tech answer.

This is a pet issue for me and why I formed Applied Ecotechnical Innovations, with a mandate that includes developing eco friendly and cost effective/energy saving housing and housing development concepts and plans as well as entire sustainable communities using the ORB waste to energy system which you see as my picture here.

Anyway, it's a day off and I am rambling but I want to say that I applaud your efforts and hope to be working with you and others like you in the future.

Eco housing has been the only real growth segment of the housing market since the down turn. The American people want and deserve energy efficient housing. We must provide it!
