Beautiful Body Butter Recipe

Adapted from Making Aromatherapy Creams and Lotions by Donna Maria (Storey Books, 2000).

Just wait until you try this: the author says it is far and away her most popular recipe, and works better than any commercial body butter she has ever used. (Body butter is a spa treatment that, unlike moisturizers, you leave on for awhile and then wash off.) In fact, the author says she has to save it ’til last in her workshops because it causes such a stir! Best of all, it uses kitchen ingredients and smells heavenly.

We could all use a little comfort and pampering after the long, hard winter. This is an easy, sensuous and delightful way to help yourself feel beautiful while you soothe your skin.

INGREDIENTS

1 ripe banana
Flesh of 1 ripe avocado
1 stick softened sweet butter
¼ cup whipping cream
1 drop rose essential oil

1. Blend the ingredients one at a time in a food processor until smooth. If necessary, add more whipping cream to make the mixture smooth and silky. If you don’t have a food processor, you can use a food masher or your hands, but a processor will make it smoother and more sensual.

2. To use: steam the bathroom to open your pores and prepare your skin for the treatment. Place an old blanket on the bathroom floor and cover with 2 large towels. Massage Body Butter over your entire body, avoiding eye area and any open wounds. Make sure to spread this luscious concoction over your face, especially if you have dry skin.

3. Now lie down on the towels and wrap yourself in them and the blanket. Close your eyes and dream for about 15 minutes. Rinse off in the shower, using a soft cloth or bath puff and a handmade soap with a luxurious lather. Feel beautiful!
