Why You Should Adopt a Lucky Black Cat

Why You Should Adopt a Lucky Black Cat

In much of the western world, black cats are thought to bring bad luck. This, of course, is both untrue and unfair. But, while black cats don’t bring bad luck, they certainly have it. Indeed, animal shelters say black cats (and black dogs) are less likely to be adopted, and thus more likely to be euthanized, than cats of other colors.

The Humane Society of  Pasadena, Calif. is looking to change that. In honor of Friday the 13th, the organization is offering $13 adoptions of black cats, including, ”spay/neuter surgery, a microchip, the first set of vaccinations, a follow-up health visit at a participating veterinarian, as well as a complimentary health and wellness exam from a participating VCA Animal Hospital.” That’s quite a discount; normally, would-be pet parents pay up to $70.

The organization even plans to offer this promotion  for the 13th of every month from now on!

Kevin McManus, the Pasadena Humane Society’s  adoptions supervisor, says,These cats and kittens are just as affectionate and adorable… Unfortunately superstitions about black cats make it harder to adopt them out. Hopefully this promotion will shed new light on them and get them into the loving homes they need.”

I adopted a black kitty from a shelter. I picked him because he was a 'squeaky wheel' constantly meowing...turned out he was hungry. While I was filling out the paper work I noticed at least 10 more black kittens and wondered why they hadn't been adopted. The girl told me that people didn't like black cats. All's the pity...my little boy has been a pure joy.

ive had two black kitties. i find them to be so beautiful (i love orange ones and silver tabbies too!). my parents kept my male black cat.. we have an outdoor dog who does not tolerate small animals and would devour my cat. plus he has lived at that house for 8 years... i feel it would be unfair to move him now. my female kitty died a couple of years ago (or at least disappeared). she was 10. i love cats but have a fairly severe allergy, and both my son and i have asthma. I wish I could have a million :) i'd love to be a cat lady. i just make sure to dote on everyone elses cat
