Can You Get Worms From Sushi?

Q: Is it true you can get worms from eating sushi?
A: It is true which is why you only want to consume sushi from a reputable source. Improperly prepared sushi may put you at risk for infection from Anisakis or other type of marine parasites. Raw fish must be frozen prior to preparing the sushi to reduce the risk of transmission.

Most all animals have intestinal parasites of some nature. When they die, worms are quick to migrate to the flesh. The main secret to avoiding this is to clean them quickly and then refrigerate or freeze quickly. Most modern fishing vessels are equipped to do this.

Second MAJOR issue, and you would think people writing here on care2 would mention this....
If it doesn't carry a proven sustainable supplier seal, such as the MSC seal of the Marine Stewardship Council, it's extremely unethical to eat either raw or cooked.
Quite a few species of fish used to make sushi are endangered and on the verge of being eaten into extinction.
Hardly surprising that this is overlooked since so many people conveniently ignore the many barbaric and unethical food practices that occur in the pacific rim nations from the whale slaughters of the Japanese to complete wholesale removal of million of acres of forests for palm plantations.
Tuna is only one example. Numerous international groups have been calling for a complete ban on ALL tuna fishing for at least five years to allow breeding stocks to recover.
Yet how many sushi lovers refuse to stop eating tuna out of their own selfish ignorance? If you love tuna, don't eat it, any tuna, for five years. PERIOD.
This is even over and above the issue of mercury which has now been found to be much higher and more harmful even than previous estimates. Even the laziest can go check recent stories on yahoo.
Lastly, don't kid yourself about sushi being eco friendly when compared to meat. It isn't. Many vegetarians repeat this myth when the facts remain that fishing as an industry uses as much or more energy and emits more pollution than meat farming.
Sushi is not the eco friendly option many c

I have to tell you I am appalled by the level of ignorance I see in several responses above. Worms are not funny, nor are they something that causes only minor inconvenience.
"Worms" as in various parasitic invertebrates, can kill.
Most infectious worm species are microscopic in their egg forms and many are while in their larval forms as well.
Several varieties of worms cause permanent physical damage to the heart, lungs and digestive tracts of the infected creature, as in YOU. One causes blindness.
Parasites also weaken the immune system and can carry other diseases as well. They also drain your energy and make you more tired and listless, often moody and can even greatly increase your reaction to things you are allergic too.
Even with so called reputable places you are not safe. Saying so is grossly irresponsible. At most you can cut your odds but even the healthiest looking fish, caught and prepared in the safest ways possible can still be infested.
Freezing or even drying is no guarantee, many species can survive these for extended periods of time, in some cases years.
The bottom line is that there is no substitute for cooking.
It should also be noted that this is a potential and even frequent problem with vegetables and other foods as well.
Many people have gotten worms simply from eating fruit that a passing bird or insect had defecated on.
Western medicine has gotten careless about parasitic infestation, relying on pharmaceutical treatmen

How can anybody in their right mind eat anything that is raw?
Anything that uncooked has a lot of dangers and that is a fact no matter how you prepare it. I think it should be against common sense law to eat anything raw.

Calm down! STOP PANICKING! registered sushi restaurants by law goes through inspection & approved health & food safe before being granted a licence. Commercially they will freeze the fish for 24 hrs deep freeze in a commercial freezer (that is 72 hrs in reg home freezer for domestic use) before they prepare/serve the fish which does kill the parasites. you haven't been ill so far have you? also if you note the fish at the restaurants is kept in a small covered glass chilled fridge system, kept at safe temp if they make the sushi in front of house & only take out what they is required to serve immediately or they would be shut down! The above 'worm/parasite' advice is true & sushi restaurantaurs are well aware of this as are all the health inspectors & is really for people like you and me who make sushi at home & is a good heads up for us. when i teach my sushi culinary classes the food handling and prep is strongly taught including the freezing to kill any parasites. just a bit of knowledge helps, so yes you can have your sushi & still enjoy it too. it is very healthy &low in fat. if you think about improper beef handling then one would get ecoli so again that shouldn't stop us from eating beef & to cook pork or chicken without any pinkness (worms/salmonella). the simple point is to just learn how to handle foods & wash hands before & after any food prep & disinfect & clean all surface areas & use clean equipment. That's
