Celebrate National Dessert Day the Vegan Way

Celebrate National Dessert Day the Vegan Way

By Dana Shultz for Diets In Review | photo by Dana Shultz

In addition to festive holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hannukah, we have one more exciting “holiday” to look forward to this time of year: National Dessert Day on Sunday, October 14.

For sugar lovers around the world, this is an absolute dream day as it not only excuses but invites an all-day celebration of sweets! As a desserts lover myself, I couldn’t be more pleased with this news and am tempted to eat nothing but cake, pie and ice cream in observation of the sugary holiday. However, while I could eat sweets all day knowing my lack of self control, a little common sense will tell me that that’s not the wisest decision when it comes to my health.

Instead, I think we should all celebrate National Dessert Day in a healthier way, by enjoying some of our favorite sweet things in moderation. Since it’s fall and Halloween is just a round the corner, we’ve compiled a fall-themed desserts round-up, all of which are vegan and 100 percent delicious. These healthier-for-you treats are mostly pumpkin themed, as pumpkin is undeniably one of the healthiest super foods around this season.

Pumpkin Spice Protein Balls – This is one of our original DIR recipes that just screams healthy fall decadance. In addition to requiring just four ingredients, these pumpkin-spice dessert balls contain nearly 3 grams of protein per serving! That’s a sweet indulgence you can actually feel good about.

Sweet and Nutty Trail Mix – All of the classic elements of trail mix come together in this sweet and nutty trail mix that’s complete with pecans, almonds, raisins, cranberries and lots of dark chocolate. Grab a 1/4 cup serving for just 179 calories and plenty of antioxidants, protein and healthy fats.

Vegan Pumpkin Apple Muffins – Fall fruit lovers rejoice! These incredibly moist pumpkin muffins feature cinnamon sauteed apples in every bite. Enjoy one as a healthy breakfast or snack, or as a sweet after-dinner treat.

Pumpkin Pie Bread Pudding – Substitute your favorite non-dairy milk for the skim in this simple-to-make recipe and you’ll have a healthy, vegan treat that comes together in less than an hour.

Vegan Pumpkin Ice Cream Sandwiches – Who said eating a vegan diet leaves no room for indulgence? This coconut milk ice cream recipe brings the flavor of classic pumpkin pie to ice cream sandwiches. The creator suggests either eating the soft serve between two graham crackers, or crumbling the crackers over top for a sundae-style dessert.

Now that you’re equipped with five delicious and healthy vegan dessert recipes, there’s no reason why you should go without a little indulgence this weekend. So go forth and celebrate National Dessert Day – after all, it only comes around once a year!
