Some of us head for the river when we need cooling relief from the muggy dog days of July and August, but if you don’t have a river nearby, try these simple refreshers instead. Inspired by Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair, by Dina Falconi (Ceres Press, 1998), they’re easy to make and fun to splash on. With special ingredients to tone and deodorize, they’ll lift your mood and revitalize you in no time.

Basic Body Splash Method
2 ounces distilled water
20 drops essential oil of choice (we recommend eucalyptus, peppermint, or lavender)

1. Find a glass bottle with a misting pump spray top (you can find old perfume bottles at garage sales or thrift shops–just be sure to wash them out very well–or you can buy new bottles online.)

2. Add the oil drop by drop to the water. Shake before every use. May be stored in the fridge for extra cooling!

Peppermint Water
2 ounces distilled water
20 drops essential oil of peppermint

Follow directions above.

Sensual Body Splash
2 ounces distilled water
10 drops essential oil of sandalwood
10 drops essential oil of ylang ylang

Follow directions above.

Can Witch Hazel be used instead of distilled water? Are there any benefits to using Witch Hazel?

MILAN K.

my enjoyment would be a nice sandlewood bath which is more refreshing and healing and it also unwinds you then i would go in to a eucalyptus steam room to relax and shut my eyes for couple of hours as for my hair i would use a indian gooseberrys oil which is more healthier and nourishing gets rid of dandruff.

Annie, does it have to be distilled water? Otherwise, they sound easy to make!
