DIY 3-Tier Nautical Shelf

You know the saying “Life is better at the beach”? While not all of us are lucky enough to live on the ocean or near a lake, that doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate a nautical theme in your home’s decor. Paint a room in a shade of sea blue with white accents and bring in coastal accessories and motifs like shells, anchor or fish. For added nautical effect, make your own beachy 3-tier shelf. It will look great in a rec room, powder room or nursery.

Although you can use any type of wood for this project, I was going for a rustic look, so I chose reclaimed wood. I cut three boards into 18-inch-long pieces and drilled four holes at the corners: 1˝ inches from the short end and one inch from the long edge.

I wanted a weathered look, so I lightly sanded the old finish, then white-washed each board with white pickling stain. I painted on a thin coat of the stain and let it sit until almost dry, then wiped off the excess.

Instead of brackets to connect the shelves together, I used Ľ-inch sisal rope.

I pulled a length of rope though the holes in the top board and then tied a knot underneath. I allowed eight inches of rope between shelves, then made a knot under the bottom shelf and cut off the excess rope.

To continue the nautical theme, I attached more rope to the front and side edges of each shelf with a hot glue gun.

That’s it! Hang it up and decorate with souvenirs from a seaside vacation to keep the beach memories alive.
