DIY Halloween Costumes (slideshow)

posted by Megan Zehnder Oct 27, 2009 1:34 pm

When Halloween rolls around, I tend to have a difficult time deciding on the perfect costume. What it often comes down to? Whatever clothes and props I have lying around the house the day before - or the day of - Halloween.

If you’re in a last-minute Halloween rush like me, or want to make your Halloween a little greener by creating your own costume, here are some suggestions that use many around-the-house items. Most of these costumes can be customized for children or adults. And be sure to click through to the last page to see my dog in a DIY pet costume.

Please feel free to add your own DIY costume suggestions in the comment field below. What kind of costume will you create this year? Or what is your favorite costume from a previous Halloween??

Next: Create a bat costume using an umbrella!

This Halloween I dressed up as a single middle aged bachelor living in his moms apartment and addicted to the net. I was Hot!

Another cute young child costume is a bag of jelly beans:

Cut off the corners of a large clear garbage bag for the feet. Fill with small balloons and tie garbage bag at the shoulder around one arm, or both if the child is samll enough. Underneath you can dress in any color with lots of layers :)

About 20 years ago, I made a witches cape by cutting the 2 ends of a piece of fabric in a zigzag pattern, then cut & hemmed a hole for the neck opening. It's gotten a lot of use, with black or red dresses, or a vampire tux, all of which came from the thrift store. All 4 of my kids (& myself :-) have used this cape over the years!

Love the little lamb! Too cute!

Easy stay at home mummy costume- wrap yourself in toilet paper. I say stay at home because it is very messy! But, fairly eco friendly- you can compost the toilet paper. I used to do this to people who would show up to my costume parties with no costume. You could also use an old sheet torn in strips and fastened with safety pins.

I am going as a bunch of grapes. My costume will consist of a purple tablecloth with a hole cut for placing over my head and many purple balloons attached to it.
