We’ve recently noticed and admired the humble rope banister. It offers a simple, clean look using an easily attained (and reclaimed) material–natural and synthetic rope. With a little thought (or a handy friend), a rope banister can become a DIY project.
If you’d prefer help, UK outfit Stair Ropes makes “stair ropes, banister rope, and rope handrails and barriers, using traditional rope working and knotting techniques and a specialist knowledge of ropes and cordage.” Stair Ropes works with clients in both the UK and the US; owner James Watson will spec individual projects and deliver all the necessary components.

Below: A selection of fittings from Stair Ropes; both natural and synthetic fiber ropes are available. Synthetic ropes are available in a wide range of colors.
The possibilities for rope are endless. For more ideas, see Remodelista’s post Design Detail: Rope as Functional Decor.

Too cute with the knot end, and the blue rope
Very nice!
I like it so much!
These would not meet building codes in the U.S.
Certainly not very sturdy or functional...and not very sanitary. I sure wouldn't trust one to be any help on that circular stairway.
