The Lesser Florican species is one of four critically endangered bird species of India, and one of the 50 rarest birds of the world. Many Lesser Floricans make the Blackbuck National Park (BNP), a grasslands habitat in Velavadar, their breeding ground. Birds lay eggs from August to September. During mating season, males may jump five hundred times in a day –jumping several feet in the air– to attract females. After the mating season, the birds move to mainland India. Males are larger than females, and more colorful. Hunting and trapping are prohibited by law.
Population estimate: 2,200
Hunting and loss of grassland habitats (some from land being converted to agriculture) have decreased the population and brought the species to an endangered status. Two sanctuaries exist: Sailana and Sardarpur. Sailana is about 12 square kilometers, and Sardarpur is 348.
Food: Insects, lizards, frogs, plus shoots, leaves, herbs and berries. Some of the insects it eats are considered pests by local farmers.
Velvadar National Park is also known for the population of endangered blackbuck (sort of like a deer), and wolves.
