Finding Your True Intention

Finding Your True Intention
6 comments

Author and physician Joan Borysenko encourages us to go beneath the surface of our lives to find our true intentions, which are “based on saying yes to your deepest longings. Goals rooted in what really matters are far easier to keep than facile resolutions that roll off the surface, right down the drain.”

She gives the example of intending to lose 10 pounds by June 1, something she failed at over and over. However, when she tapped into herself at the soul level, what came out was “I will care for my body so that I can continue to feel the pleasure of being fit and fully alive as I grow older.” That was something she could really care about—and work toward!

What do you care enough about to apply the necessary elbow grease?

To try: This practice comes from my friend Dawna Markova, author of Spot of Grace: Remarkable Stories of How You DO Make a Difference.

1. Write every goal you think you’d like to accomplish in the next 20 years. Write as fast as possible.

2. Then, write the number of years you want it to take (one, five, 10, or 20).

3. Circle the top four one-year goals that you want the most.

4. Write down some of the things you may need to do that you don’t want to in order to make these goals happen.

5. Choose the goal that you are willing to do the hard things for.

Ready to get started? Post your intent and find community support and content to help you achieve it!

In this monthlong learning series, M.J. Ryan, author of the best-selling book This Year I Will…: How to Finally Change a Habit, Keep a Resolution, or Make a Dream Come True, will take you through four steps, each lasting one week, to help you figure out what your most important intentions are and give you the tools to make each a reality. Just joining the learning series? Go here to start at the beginning. Intent.com provides content and community for who you aspire to be–personally, socially and globally.

Christopher I agree with much of what you said about The Secret and the "ownership" class, but I disagree that social class controls everything that happens to us. I believe that attitude and intention have a direct effect in our lives. While I believe there are things that are completely our of our control such as health issues, I also know that our intentions, thoughs and actions will affect those same issues.

Christopher, there are so many examples of "lower class" people creating all they desire - famous and not so famous. Don't limit yourself. YOU control your attitude, welcome the challenge.

Christopher ... I mean this in all sincerity and kindness. You might want to look inward to what your "beliefs" are about life, class and money.

The Secret is an owning class myth machine (that's profiting greatly for a few owning classers, surprise surprise). Hopefully that's not what this piece is about.

Intentions (or ole fashioned "resolutions") often fail because they're framed improperly to motivate you. An intention isn't enough. A properly framed one will indeed tap the deeper consciousness in you and help you actually get where you need to go. They also have to be somewhat realistic... lets not pretend social class position doesn't exist. Intentions for a project requiring a large canvas are unrealistic for a lower class person (like me) until we can get a better positioning or patronage from someone above us. That's the dirty little secret in Amerika today... class determines altitude for 99% of us. For the 11000 who are in the ruling class, the sky is the limit. Keep that in mind when you frame your intentions.

I am not an Oprah fan but give me a break Jo Bennet. people are fallible - EVEN Oprah...oh the horror! There are constant cycles in ones life and when a "bad" one may start you may not be slapped awake before the end of it, and you find yourself in a predicament that seems all to familiar. Where's the empathy and support for your fellow humans? Go list YOUR goals in life and worry more about those than your neighbors.

Jo Bennett

Well someone ought to deep cousel Oprah who is on the very misguided public journey to attempt to bring her listeners to her and "an answer" when she herself doesn't get her own lack of personal acceptance of herself...it's a fraud for her and everyone...she does great works but sure has the missed the marks on this one.
