Frankincense and Myrrh: Oils of Peace and Freedom
17 comments

Inspired by Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit, by Gabriel Mojay (Healing Arts Press, 1997).

The three Magis brought gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to Nazareth to give to the child Jesus. Each of these gifts had practical as well as symbolic meaning. While gold brings comfort, Frankincense and Myrrh aromas have been used throughout time as aids for spiritual transcendence and peace, to manifest Heaven on Earth.

Frankincense and Myrrh are both resinous gums, a fluid that oozes from the bark of shrubby trees found in the Near East and the Mediterranean. Oils are extracted from the gum, and the purest oils are extracted using steam distillation.

The oils are experiencing a resurgence recently, for those celebrating the New Age and the unity of the divine feminine and the divine masculine.
Frankincense
As a gift for Jesus, Frankincense was included because it symbolized his priesthood, his stature as a spiritual leader and teacher.
Frankincense can provide profound spiritual benefits, especially the power to focus our spiritual consciousness and help us towards transcendent awareness.
It is known to help us to detach from that which doesn’t have deeper spiritual meaning, such as over-attention to materialism, helping the personality better integrate with the Higher Self.

A beautiful oil for the holiday season, Frankincense helps us ground and become centered on the Earth, with tranquility and clarity about our deeper values.
It also is the oil of choice for the nervous system, supporting the flow of Qi-energy, and giving us a hand when faced with tension, stress and exhaustion.

Myrrh
Myrrh was given as a gift to Jesus as a symbol that he was born to die. Myrrh is so very antibacterial it was often used for embalming the dead as well as being burned at funerals to honour the dead. Myrrh is known to unite Heaven and Earth in a person, the spiritual with the physical. It is aromatherapy for manifestation of the spiritual in oneself. It was drunk by Ancient Hebrews to raise their consciousness. It also helps the Higher Self manifest and transcend the material.

Like with Frankincense, Myrrh works therapeutically on the nervous system, to calm the mind and instill tranquility. It is an aroma to bring peace and inner stillness. Also like Frankincense it is also a very earthy aroma.

Buying Tips
When buying essential oils of these gums make particularly sure that you are buying pure oils. Both Frankincense and Myrrh help calm the nervous system, and you’d be working at cross purposes if you use oils that are blended with synthetic fragrance oils made from neurotoxic chemicals. One way to test for the purity of an oil is to put a drop on a blotting paper. A pure oil will evaporate completely.

Try to buy an oil that is extracted by steam distillation.

Pregnant and lactating women and people using prescription drugs should consult their physician before using these oils.

Hello, Shellie. Your response was fun to read, but I'm afraid you are misinformed.

Unless your "list" includes producers that follow AFNOR/ISO guidelines, they are producing substandard product ... no matter how long they have been in business.

It would be best for you and others that might be confused by your remarks to read the following article by David Stewart, Ph.D. on the subject: http://is.gd/hmB4.

As Dr. Stewart states: "The AFNOR-ISO standard is the only standard in the world that specifically sets a measure for an essential oil to be “therapeutic.” There are other standards. For example, USP Grade A is basically a food or fragrance grade. USP means United States Pharmacopoeia, which is a set of profiles that oils must meet and which can be met by artificially manipulating the oil by adding synthetic components or refining the oil to remove certain components. Hence, an USP grade oil is, by definition, not therapeutic inasmuch as it has been manipulated to meet a consistent standard for fragrance or flavor..."

Also, unless you plan to tackle the mammoth task of producing therapeutic-grade essential oils yourself, a "pitch", as you put it, can be a welcomed thing. For an open-minded person, it could lead to lifesaving information they may not otherwise know about.

Perhaps in the future, your comments could be more constructive and pertinent to the topic at hand so that readers can enjoy more of your FRAGRANCE and less ODOR.

Well, Joe, glad you have had such good effects wtih essnetial oil. I have too! And I don't use Young L and yes, it does sound like a pitch to sell product and is not that unusual with multilevel folks esp. from this company. I have a website, too, not multi-level, did not mention it on this list. And by the way, that company may be the only one you know...it is far from the only one that provides quality therapeutic essential oils. I could give a list of others, but will just suggest to readers that they can find wonderful oils elsewhere and from companies that have been around for a long time, too. That YL "we're the only ones" thing is soooo old!!!

(REVISED VERSION) ....

The "warning" given by the author about the necessity of using PURE essential oils is absolutely true. Failure to do this may result in the use of a defective productive, which is not only a WASTE of money, but can be harmful to the user.

Like anything else in the market place, there are different grades of product being sold as "pure" or "natural." You have your "Pintos" and you have your "Cadillacs." Therefore, one must be sure to use essential oils are THERAPEUTIC-GRADE. What does that mean? That means that they are of the purity and efficacy to be considered for medicinal use. Anything less than that is a waste of time and effort!

Too many producers out there are selling essential oils that have been "extended", contain fillers and other impurities, or have been improperly grown and distilled to where they are fragrant but NO medicinal.

The only essential oil producer I am aware of which offers products in the standard of A.F.N.O.R./I.S.O. (a.k.a. organically pure, therapeutic-grade -- contact me for more info on this) is Young Living Essential Oils. This is why I have been a consumer and practitioner specializing in their products for more than ELEVEN YEARS now. My health is much too important to be a victim of ignorance.

If this sounds like a commercial, I will not apologize. Over these past 11 years, YLEO has saved the lives of myself, various family members, and various others I have known.

Resin oils like Myrrh and some others, like Patchouli, will not evaporate completely or will take a very long time to do so...that is not the best method to test all oils for purity.
Myrrh also was known to 'cast out anger' and would have been protective from the anger of Herod against the Jews. Another symbolic gesture.
But truly the amount these essences cost in those days made them treaures of great significance in that alone...not your usual baby gift! :-)
These two blend beautifully wiht orange and cinnamon for holiday fragrance sprays. Air sprays alleviate the issues some have with the smoke from burning even the purist incense.

Beth Coccaro

incense sticks commonly contain toxins and carcinogens, burn resin incense instead.

Myrrh is still widely used in the Middle East for it's antibacterial properties... I live in Saudi Arabia, and here it's used for everything from bedsores to episiotomies.

The oils of frankincense and myr are today sold in Walmart as a topical medicine rubbed into the skin just behind the ear for dizzy spells.

Hi,
Epiphany is the Christian festival of the revealing of the Messiah to the gentiles. God's grace is for everyone. (o:
Epiphany occurs after Christmas and is celebrated by most Christians on Jan. 6.
The Christmas story in Matthew chapter two tells of the Magi's visit to be at the place of Jesus' birth, Bethlehem.
Best wishes,
Davie

Frankincense - recent research shows that it is effective for a variety of ailments. Respiratory tract: clears the lungs, helps with asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, coughs, colds, etc.

For women: can be used to ease heavy periods, & is used for its calming effect during labor.
Also useful for rheumatism, & urinary tract problems.

Frankincense oil is used in various skin lotions for its rejuvenation for aging skin. It is a skin tonic -healing with sores, skin inflammation, wounds, scars, etc.
I use only the highest quality therapeutic grade oils. And that's very important- whether you're buying Frankincense or other essential oils.

There's so much more information about natural essential oils. And so much recent research about the healing effects of many of these ancient oils.

Good point Nadia - perhaps. It depends on how long Mary, Joseph & Jesus stayed in Bethlehem before they went back home to Nazareth...and when the wise men arrived.
