Gender-Bending Phthalates

Gender-Bending Phthalates

Male infants whose mothers’ bodies contained high levels of chemicals called phthalates (THAY-lates) during pregnancy may have abnormal genital development and possible future fertility problems, according to a new study in Environmental Health Perspectives.

Personal care and cosmetic companies commonly use phthalates in products such as makeup, shampoo, hairspray, soaps, nail polish and perfumes. Plastics, paints and some pesticides also contain the chemicals. Numerous phthalate studies have observed reproductive anomalies in animals, but this is one of the few that examines possible effects in humans.

The researchers found a direct correlation between phthalate levels in pregnant women and subtle genital birth defects in their year-old sons that could lead to impaired testosterone production as the boys mature.

However, the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association and the American Chemistry Council charge that the study is flawed and purely speculative.

Manufacturers aren’t required to list phthalates on product labels, so the general public is largely unaware of their exposure levels. Go to www.SafeCosmetics.org or www.NotTooPretty.org for more information on phthalates and what you can do to avoid them.

I got pregnant when I stopped using all lotions, makeup, deodorant, shampoo, nail polish, etc. that included toxic chemicals, e.g. phthalates. I had a very healthy pregnancy full term, (actually was overdue). I had no epidural and delivered naturally at 42 years old. I had 2 miscarriages prior to eliminating these toxic products from my life. I now only use limited body/skin and haircare care items without toxic ingredients that are rated low on EWG's cosmetic rating database. David, you are out of your mind... I was breastfed along with my sisters and brother. None of us were mass murderers, go figure. What does your comments have to do with phthalates anyway?

Susan W.

David -- Sounds like you hate women who breast feed but can anyone tell what you are trying to say?

David Harmon

STOP blaming the generation before you. Now adays there are more 14 yrolds with kids than ever before. We lost the RESPONCIBLE for your ACTIONS clause. WE PAY YOU TO HAVE MULTIPULE KIDS NOW. Not back in the baby boomer days. RELGIOUS CRAP pushes PRO_CREATION rather you can afford them or not. TAX-PAYERS will foot the bill plus give the parent(s) money. Other countries influx here have also created a population boom in the USA. As for poisoning, anything you put in your body rather aspirin or olive oil absorbed by the skin winds up in MOMMYS MILK. HELLO! Does not take a genius to understand how. If you are not in a dark cave no cloths no tv no food other than all natural you WILL pass crap onto the kid via breast feeding. PERIOD! In todays world of toxic everything breast feeding is a 50/50 gamble. Besides another study performed in the 70's not talked about now adays is that 98.7% of all mass murders were BREAST FED.PERHAPS the crap passed on durring breast feeding. You THINK? MAKE it the parents RESPONCIBILITY to provide for their children NOT THE ENTIRE VILLAGE. STOP allowing religious scare tactics based on PRO-CREATION or youll go to hell. MARRIAGE is not the answer for EVERYONE. Nor is PRO-CREATION. As for the toxicity of today would take 1000's of years to clean it up to the point of non harm. REMEMBER: Even animals know when to stop breast feeding their young and it's not 3 years old MOMMYS. Over kill can and is harmful too. In more ways than one.

Also, I just read an article that claims pregnant moms can also cause this in their sons if they eat meat while knocked up. It might be just red meat, it might be just reproduction, but it's almost a double edged sword of a situation. More meat consumed leads to more harms environmentally, but if it eating it leads to fewer people that are bad environmentally, well....

Cindy M.

That's why we need to contact our elected officials and let them know we'll support them if they support campaign finance reform. Teabaggers DON'T have the answer, that's a silly things started by the likes of a fat, pill-popping-perv with zero sense. Let's do something that works, other than voting with our pocket books, as we can avoid phthalates ourselves, and warn others, but teabaggers aren't going to listen. They're fighting a different war, one that exists only in their ignorance and rush limbaugh's creations (who's paid $400million by corporations to do so).

Are those two links supposed to be the same?

Susan W.

Phthalates are reducing the QUALITY and not the QUANTITY of humans. Humans need to control their own births.

for the past few thousand years human population has been increasing by about 8% or less a century. when caesar and christ were bopping about, the best estimate of the durants and other historians is that there were about 500 million people alive then. in 1900, there population had doubled and was at 1 billion people as the first huge censuses showed. {see http://opr.princeton.edu/popclock/}with the 700% increase in human population since 1900 due to the hideous mismanagement of the industrial revolution which has given us 25+ current ecological disasters of wich global warmingis just one of the converging tributaries... what is desperately needed by mother nature is for 75% or more of humanity to be suddenly sterile and infertile. then, in 70 years or so, population would be back where it naturally would be: about 1.2 billion humans. so if pthalates help reduce this nature-killing species numbers; good.

I wonder if any research has linked this to testicular cancer? My son had it when he was 21 and it was suggested that it might have been caused by some connection to mothers. No one knew then and as far as I know, still don't know the cause.
