George Bush’s Niece: Vegetarian and Hunger Activist

George Bush’s Niece: Vegetarian and Hunger Activist

Model and designer Lauren Bush became a vegetarian at the age of four. (In an interview last year she said some of her veggie meals were veggie chili, pumpkin ravioli, and Brussel sprouts.) She isn’t interested in pursuing politics like her grandfather George H. W. Bush or her uncle George W. Bush, who have both been presidents.

She chose to work on alleviating world hunger through a United Nations Food Program when she was in college. After that she partnered with Ellen Gustafson, and they started the FEED Foundation. The FEED Projects sell items such as this Feed 2 Kenya bag, which was made by women and people suffering from hearing loss in Kenya.  The price is 195 dollars, but 100 dollars is a donation to help the people who made it. The FEED Foundation’s website says they have sold about 530,000 bags, and provided well over 50 million meals. They also sell Plumpy the Feed 5 Bear, for 60 dollars; every purchase of Plumpy the Bear feeds five children. In 2008, their bags began appearing in Whole Foods stores, and they were able to donate $5 million to help feed hungry people.

Feeding starving children abroad is not her only focus though. She is also advocating for better nutrition and health education at home, due to the problem of childhood obesity. She said, “Our approach to change is ground-up and empowers teachers and schools around the country. We would obviously love for change to happen at the DC top-down as well, and for school food providers to be given larger budgets to provide healthier school meals for kids.” She and Ellen are also collaborating with Donors Choose to bring their FEED Projects success to American school classrooms.

Though she comes from a very political family, Ms. Bush has a different path, “I approach this more from a humanitarian perspective; I wanted to do good through business, and that’s not conservative or liberal.”

I guess maybe there was a strong gust of wind blowing when this particular apple fell from the Bush family tree.

This fits right in with the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas. It is oufitted with all the latest energy saving technology unlike Al Gore's energy hog sprawling home. I am no fan of the ruling elite but it is foolish to think they are 100% evil.
