Have a Lonesome Glove? Give it Some Love!

Have a Lonesome Glove? Give it Some Love!

Have you recently pulled the cold weather clothes out of hibernation? Are the stray gloves looking for mates? Much like socks, gloves have a tendency to lose their other halves. The environmental group Green Thing has launched a venture that pairs up single gloves and sells them to new owners. Matched by size, not color, Glove Love offers an interesting reuse. Single gloves are washed, repaired, labeled, given nametags and letters of introduction. Then the gloves are sold and the profits go to the registered charity, Green Thing Trust.

I spotted Green Thing on the Springwise site. It is highlighted here because it’s a non-profit organization that inspires green intentions in people who want to make a difference (sound Care2ish?). With each sale of a pair of gloves, Green Thing keeps single gloves out of landfills and avoids manufacturing a new pair. Giving the proceeds to charity is the icing on the cake.

When asked how they spend the money collected from selling gloves, they quip, “On fast electric cars and cases of organic wine. No, not really. Green Thing will put all its money into helping as many people as possible in as many countries as possible to do the Green Thing. It obviously needs to pay for staff and other business costs. Any profits beyond that go to our environmental charity Green Thing Trust which exists to fight climate change.”

Want to further Green Thing’s mission? Here’s how Glove Love works:

• Fill out this form and print it with your lone gloves.
• Send it to the Green Thing.
• Check out the Glove Love store.

Watch this youtube video if you need more convincing to find mates for your lonesome gloves and do the green thing:

Since lots of small things can add up to big things, Glove Love seems like a step in the greenest direction.

Green Thing suggests these seven things we can do to lead a greener life:
1. You get from A to B without any C when you Walk The Walk
2. It’s delicious but it causes more CO2 than cars so go Easy On The Meat
3. Resist the urge to buy the latest and Stick With What You Got
4. Turn down the central heating and turn up the Human Heat
5. The art of wasting nothing and using up everything: All-Consuming
6. Instead of jetting your way around the world, Stay Grounded
7. Don’t leave it on or even put it on, Plug Out

OK, I’ve sent out those single gloves to make a glove story. Now, if I could only find something to make my laundry room look less like a lonely socks club!
