Health Benefits & Uses For Molasses

If your morning smoothie needs a sweetener boost, what is your usual go-to? Many people might reach for the maple syrup, agave nectar, honey, dates or stevia—which are fabulous—but what about molasses? This strong, sticky substance has excellent health benefits and can be used in a variety of imaginative recipes and home remedies. If you don’t already have a bottle in your pantry, one will surely end up on your grocery list by the end of this post.

Molasses is what is left after processing sugar cane and sugar beets. The dark syrup contains trace minerals that our bodies need to regulate and function properly and it can be a great addition to our food rotation. Molasses has 21 percent of our daily calcium requirements in a 3.5 ounce serving, which is great for bone health, the nervous system and heart function. There are also significant levels of magnesium, which works together with calcium to regulate body functions, and potassium, which is essential for proper muscle contractions. Those with iron deficiencies can also benefit from drizzling molasses into their diet and the antioxidant content in this sticky-sweet syrup is impressive, as well.

How does one incorporate molasses into their cooking? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Use it to sweeten dishes as you would honey, maple syrup or agave. Drizzle on oatmeal or into a smoothie to boost your meal into the super-healthy category.
  • Bake it into energy bars or roll it into raw energy balls for a quick snack.
  • Whisk into marinades, dressings, or even homemade BBQ sauce for your favorite family meal or as a thoughtful holiday gift.
  • Explore the baking world with the addition of the distinct flavor of molasses in muffins, cakes, and pies.
  • Try your hand at making homemade baked beans and other savory dishes with this sweet flavoring.

Not only is molasses a delicious addition to all these recipes, but there is anecdotal evidence that it can help with other health issues. For instance, some say that consuming molasses while menstruating can help reduce severe symptoms when mixed with hot water, like tea. Others swear by conditioning their hair with the stuff and some even say adding it to their diets has helped ease pain caused by arthritis.

Used molasses when I used to make my own bread with trustworthy organic components. I can understand the problems with buying honey, but simply can't imagine that molasses would be truly organic here...

Have used for years. Drizzle over a dish of ice cream, put in smoothies, use in my own stir fry sauce recipes. Lots of iron and minerals. Yum!

I buy a nice pure organic molasses and it is great for oatmeal, baking and making homemade BBQ sauce. I never thought of it for my raw energy balls, I will have to try that next time.
