How Animal Smart are You? (Quiz!)

  • 4 of 5

5. The strongest animal in the world in terms of its size is:

b. rhinoceros beetle

Rhinoceros beetles are the master weightlifters — these little olympians can lift an item 850 times their weight! A human weight-lifting champ can only lift about 17 times his body weight — and for a very limited amount of time.

6. Giraffes average how much sleep in 24 hour cycle?

a. 30 minutes

You are unlikely to catch a giraffe sleeping as they only get about 30 minutes of shut-eye a day, usually only a few minutes at a time. Maybe we need to change the term “cat nap” to “giraffe nap” when we hope to catch a few zzzzz in the middle of the day.

7. There are how many species of frogs:

c. 4,800

Frogs range from the subarctic to the tropics, with the majority of the 4,800 species hopping and chirping in rainforests. With 4,800 species, frogs are one of the most diverse vertebrate groups.

8. There are how many species of lice?

c. 3,000

Yes, there are 3,000 species of lice roaming the world — or should I say on the skin, hair, fur and feathers of the world. EVERY avian and mammal species except monotremes (egg-laying mammals), dolphins, whales, bats and pangolins hosts one or more of these wingless ectoparasites. Fortunately, out of the 3,000 species of lice only four are classified as human disease agents.

9. Cows produce more milk when listening to classical music.  True or False?

Scientists in the U.K. played music of different tempos to Friesan dairy cows. Some music elicited more milk — up to a pint more per cow, per day. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and Simon and Garfunkle’s Bridge over Troubled Water were both big hits in the milking shed.  When “rowdy” music was piped into the barn, no increase in production was noted, thus it is clear the cows prefer mellower music.
