Fall is here, and you know what that means – apples! Lots of ‘em. So how do you choose what type to get? Slate asked Andrew Mikolajski, author of The Illustrated World Encyclopedia of Apples, his recommendations for which apples to choose for various situations, both practical and silly. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find Gravensteins here in Portland, OR for several years, but their complete demise would probably be news to Sonoma County, CA, where the annual Gravenstein apple fair was held in August this year.

Choosing the 'right apple' here in the Philippines involves choosing from what is available, and what is not going soft or beginning to rot.

Galas are about teh best we have here, and Red delicious? forget it, the skins could cover cricket balls!
