How to Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight

Q: Is it possible to quit smoking without gaining weight?

A: The nicotine in cigarettes stimulates the body’s metabolism, and in the absence of that extra kick, the body settles back to its normal rate of metabolism.

Gaining weight is about consuming more calories than your body burns. To avoid weight gain when quitting smoking means paying closer attention to the foods that you are eating and the amount of physical activity you are getting.

If you stop smoking, you definitely have the urge to eat more. That together with the lack of stimulation for the metabolism, can easily lead to weight gain. The trick is not to eat the wrong kind of foods. Have some carrots and lots of delicious fruit in the fridge so that whenever you fancy something to eat, simply eat that. At mealtimes, simply load your plates with vegetables and cut down on other more fattening foods. That will make the whole process quite manageable.

It's all really mind over matter.

If you set your mind to stop smoking, you can also tell your mind not to eat junk food.

Brenda gave some good, honest advise. Yoga does help ... at ANY age

This actually makes sense. Because when I quit I tried to make sure not to over eat and eat healthy, I did not think I would need to eat less. I gained 30 pounds in 3 months and tried adding exercise and I lost 5 pounds and that was it. The quick weight gain caused alot of pain in my hips, with pinched nerves in different areas. A little good old fashion yoga and a simple little ball helped with that, it took over a year to figure it all out. But I am pain free and smoke free. No body said it was a easy.
