9 Ways Fingernails Can Reflect Health

Are you wondering what those white spots, bulges, or ridges on your fingernails mean? Dr. Cobi Slater, PhD, DNM, CHT, RNCP, ROHP at Essential Health Natural Wellness Clinic, in Maple Ridge, Canada says “Changes in fingernail appearance can indicate something deeper is going on in the body.” They can provide clues to your health and nutritional status. She shared the following simple way to decode your fingernails:

  • White spots – zinc deficiency
  • Yellow nails – liver and/or gallbladder issues
  • Bluish or grey colored nails – heart condition
  • Brown nails – adrenal gland dysfunction

  • Vertical ridges – metabolic disorders or lung issues
  • Horizontal ridges – gout, heart and circulation conditions
  • Small bulges – nail fungi or iron deficiency

  • Spoon shaped – iron deficiency or damage from harsh detergents
  • Hourglass shape – bronchial or lung conditions
