As someone who does wild hedgehog-rescue I'll buy "sweet", more or less, but "gentle"??? They're busy little predators and very aggressive scrappers, at least in the breeding season, and they have a long mouth full of horrible little teeth like a miniature Doberman's..

What's remarkable about them socially is that because they can eat almost anything and hardly anything can eat them, they're much less disturbed by human contact than most wild animals. The last one I saw on my garden, before they went to sleep for the winter, didn't even bother to roll up or run away or even raise all its spines, but just sat there and raised a bunch of spines on the flank nearest to me - the hedgehog equivalent of a two-fingered salute. Had I tried to touch it it would have done a vertical lift-off and jabbed those spines into the underside of my arm, and then resumed doing whatever it had been doing before.
