There are some people who really, truly believe they are vampires – and not just on Halloween. According to the website Real Vampire, real vampires exist and there are a number of unique characteristics that these vampires share including having a dark ring around the iris, glassy nails that are particularly strong and pronounced psychic abilities. Vampires are also emphatically not vegetarians.
Real vampires are able, they claim, to safely digest more than 600% of the daily recommended dose of iron when in blood form. And yes, they really drink blood. Human blood. If they can find a healthy, willing donor. If not, they feed (their term not mine) on a combination of raw, rare and cooked meat as well as pure blood from a variety of animals. Below, are two blood-intensive recipes from the website Real Vampire, that if you were a real vamp, you just might serve for dinner.
Veriohukaiset (Blood Pancakes)
- 1 3/4 cup pork blood
- 1 3/4 cup milk
- 1 3/4 cup rye flour
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp dark molasses
- 1/2 -1 tsp salt
- pinch of pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon of dried marjoram
- 1 small onion
1. Thaw blood overnight, if frozen.
2. Mince onion and saute in butter until translucent. Let cool.
3. Strain blood into bowl.
4. Whisk blood and milk together.
5. Add molasses, salt, pepper and marjoram.
6. Slowly whisk in the flour and stir until the mixture is smooth.
7. Add the sauteed onion.
8. Cover the batter and let sit for an hour, so the flour will swell.
9. Heat frying pan until sizzling.
10. Butter the pan generously. Pour first batch of pancakes either large or small.
11. Continue until batter is finished.
12. Serve your blood pancakes hot with cranberry sauce or lingonberry jam.

Drisheen (Black Pudding)
- 2 cups of blood (sheep, pig, turkey, goose)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup cream of cream
- 1 cup of bread crumbs or oatmeal
- 1/3 tsp of pepper
- pinch of mace
- Sprig of thyme (or tansy)
1. Mix the salt into the blood.
2. Mix the blood with the cream.
3. Mix-in the bread crumbs, pepper, mace and tansy.
4. Pour into greased glass dish and bake at 300 to 350 degrees for about 1 hour.
5. Cool and then put in refridgerator.
6. Drisheen is best served sliced, either fried or grilled, either with bacon, eggs or sausages.

However, the vampire website Drink Deeply and Dream warns about trying to meet vampires and cultish vampire wanna-bes who can be dangerous, especially online.
Personally, I like the idea of human diversity, so why not add vampires to that list of diversity, especially, if as Luna says, real vampires never kill humans to feed and only drink human blood when gifted willingly. I can handle that. Can you? If nothing else, the thought of real vampires out there makes Halloween seem a little more scary and a little more exciting, don’t you think?
