The Oscar-winning British actress has declared cosmetic surgery unacceptable, and states she will never get it done. “It goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty. I will never give in,” she said. (Source: Daily Telegraph)
Over the years she has consistently spoken up for women appreciating themselves as they are naturally. Growing up with a body type that is not stick thin, and pursuing acting at the same time, appears to have led to a healthy and realistic view on body image. This past Spring she said in an interview, “I don’t have parts of my body that I hate or would like to trade for somebody else’s or wish I could surgically adjust into some fantasy version of what they are.” (Source: Okmagazine.com) Winslet has been known to speak out about body image issues for women, particularly as they are related to ideals created by mass media.
Kate said as a child she was overweight, and it impacted her sense of what was possible in the future, because she didn’t see any overweight famous actresses. So speaking about it now could help young women feel they have a chance too. Even Oprah complimented Winslet on her natural physique.
If you believe this is just all talk, she won a libel lawsuit about her body image from a newspaper for $40,000. “I felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise,” she explained. Actually her talking about the subject has raised awareness, because of all the press coverage a famous actress receives. Her consistency on body image issues has been celebrated by various websites, but it also is about her relationship with her own daughter. She is frightened by the possibility her daughter could be influenced by images of underweight women in the media.
