California-based start up Makani Power believes the future of clean, sustainable energy is in the skies. The company is developing kite technology they say harnesses wind power far more efficiently and at half the cost of current wind turbines in use today.

You still need a way to store the energy for use when it is needed. Turbines are so variable, they need conventional backup to stabilize the output to the extent needed for the grid. This flying turbine will need the same backup. I hope they are working on a battery that can do the job, otherwise, we will need additional gas fires electric generators wherever they fly.
An idea whose time may have come.
