The Healing Power of Basil: Depression and More

By Cait Johnson, inspired by Aromatherapy for Everyone, by P.J. Pierson and Mary Shipley (Vital Health Publishing, 2004).

Even though the sun is shining brightly, we can still suffer occasional bouts of depression. But this essential oil, derived from a well-known cooking herb, will really help! Not only can it lift our mood, it also relieves stress and headaches, and is reputed to improve concentration. In fact, its powers are so great, the Hindus believed it was a passport to heaven and its very name means “king.”

Find out how to use the essential oil of basil to experience relief from some of life’s ills:

For relief of depression, anxiety and stress: Use 2 or 3 drops in a diffuser. You could also add 2 or 3 drops to one ounce of carrier oil and use as a body massage oil.

To improve concentration: Put 2 or 3 drops in a diffuser.

For headaches: Put 2 or 3 drops on a hot or cold compress (depending on your preference).

I didnt know they made an essential Oil from it- but now that I do know, it will be the next thing added to my shopping list. I love Basil in our garden, and cut it up over sliced tomatoes, mozzerella , olive oil and balsamic vinegar-- yumm!

I can see how healing it's wonderful scent would be to breath while taking a shower-- thanks for that tip, Kellie! I dont have a sauna, but the shower would still work

Thank you for the wonderful information. Basil oil is really nice, and has served as a powerful aid for sleep with me, by placing a few drops in a hot pot and let it diffuse in my bedroom has been just wonderful. The tip about clary sage is nice to know. Must try it. Thanks, again.

I use Basil in the sauna and it's a wonderful way to start the day! Lavender is my favorite at night.

Clary Sage essential oil also helps with depression. A few deep breathes straight from the bottle help almost immediately with mild depression & anxiety. Rubbing a few drops into the soles of your feet can work longer.
