Make Your Own Natural Body Lotion

Make Your Own Natural Body Lotion

If you’re tired of all the chemicals and synthetic fragrances in most store-bought creams and lotions, you might want to consider making your own.  Most people think that making creams and body lotions is difficult but it’s actually fairly easy.  I frequently make my own and give them as gifts to friends and family members who seem to love them.

If you can, I recommend that you keep an old blender, a small- to medium-size glass bowl, and a spatula that you use solely for making natural aromatherapy products.   While you can use your kitchen blender, the beeswax found in natural creams can leave a residue on the blender and utensils used.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3/4 cup of pure oil (I like sweet almond oil since it absorbs well and doesn’t leave a greasy film.  It’s available in most health food stores
  • 1 cup of pure water (or you can use rose water–available in health food stores)
  • 2 Tablespoons of shaved beeswax (most health food stores sell plain beeswax.  Be sure to avoid other types of wax since they are made of petroleum byproducts)
  • 30 drops of essential oils (like lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot, or other oil.  Make sure you avoid “fragrance oil” since it is synthetic.  Lavender is a great one to start with since it is aromatic but also soothes sunburns, other types of burns, and is healing for most skin types).
  • a glass jar or small glass jars for storing the lotion

DIY Winter Glow Shimmering Body Cream!
Most people would use this shimmering body cream during the summer to give their skin a shimmering glow. However i like to use it all year round, who says you can’t glow in the winter? Cocoa butter helps with stretch marks and helps skin retain moisture. This cream will leave you with skin that’s soft and well hydrated.

Ingredients:

1 cup cocoa butter

1 cup emulsifying wax

1/3 cup of hazelnut oil

1 cup hot water

Mica Powder (Your favorite color)

Directions:

Over medium low heat melt the cocoa butter, emulsifying wax and oil together in the top of a double boiler stirring to combine, (do not let the mixture come to a boil). Remove from heat and then add in the hot water mixing thoroughly. Let the mixture cool down to thicken, and then add in mica powder, a little at a time to you get your desired color. Store your body cream in a jar with an airtight lid, and keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

Sounds good, I will substitute macadamia wax for the beeswax as I am vegan. Thanks :)

I tried this recipe; thanks for posting it. I found that there was left-over water after blending, but I skipped the essential oils (since I wanted as few ingredients as possible and unscented). Do you think that made the difference? Thanks!

Nice suggestion. What we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstreams so avoiding the toxic chemical ingredients found in so many commercial lotions and cosmetics is very important.
