Massive Attack on GMO Labeling Proposal in California

  • 9 of 10

Beware of the Hired Front-Groups

In a recent Huffington Post article (19), public health lawyer Michelle Simone warns that many former tobacco industry consultants are now hard at work devising battle plans for the food industry against California’s Proposition 37. She writes:

“…Another tactic honed by Big Tobacco is to form a front group that appears to be made up of small businesses and others, in order to give the impression of a grassroots campaign, but which is really funded by large corporations. This tactic, known as Astroturfing, is alive and well with ‘No on 37,’ which describes itself as a ‘broad coalition of family farmers, scientists, doctors, taxpayers, small businesses, labor, food companies, biotechnology companies and grocers.’

Small farmers and small businesses? I don’t see any listed on the ‘Who We Are’ page. I do see many not-so-small trade groups representing numerous not-so-small corporations, some of them from outside California, including CropLife America, which is a trade group for the biotech and pesticide industry.

…Another group with Big Tobacco origins now spreading lies about the GMO labeling initiative is the unsubtle front group California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, whose executive director recently warned us to ‘beware of trial lawyers lurking in your food.’ (It seems lawyers are scarier than altering the genetic code of the food supply.) …In sum the food industry, to oppose a simple labeling law, is hiring lawyers and consultants with ties to the tobacco industry, to deploy stealth tactics such as creating front groups, digging up dirt on opponents, and spreading outright lies.

For decades the tobacco industry and its shills hid the truth by deploying its most effective weapon: manufacturing doubt about the health hazards of smoking. How many millions of Americans died as a result of Big Tobacco’s deceptive and cynical campaign? Why would we trust these same operators now?”

The Final Hope for Americans to Achieve Basic GMO Labeling

As we are only weeks away before voting begins, this is our final push to raise funding and awareness for the Proposition 37 campaign.

There may never be another chance to achieve labeling in the United States.

We have a two party system bought and paid for by corporations. For all the feigned differences and opposition, the two capitalist parties are united by a single corporate agenda. Much of that agenda has been dictated by Monsanto and other GMO corporations. We need to demand a complete ban on GMO. Getting that ban may require system change by voting out the Monsanto drones presently in office. We need a political party with a clear position against GMO, a party that isn't for sale to the highest bidders: that party is the Green Party of the United States.

Monsanto is destruction, killers it is more evil than the devil itself Problem is what I want to write would take 13 boxes. So by now if anyone who has read this and researched it thinks GMO are safe its too late for you. We must stop this, personally if GMO's are not labeled in a couple years I'm moving to Europe because I want to live not die, its a matter of life and death in my opinion. I Love my country but I fear my government.....PERIOD!

In November California voters will consider Proposition 37 to establish if they wish to require labeling of food products containing GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).
Monsanto provides most GMO seeds which include Roundup Ready (RR) soy, corn, canola, sugar beets and more. Many RR crops are genetically engineered to survive insects and spraying with Roundup herbicide during weed abatement efforts.
Monsanto asserts that GMO laden food requires no labeling because ‘they have not been proven to be harmful’. Industry insiders, the FDA, EPA .et al remain so infused with employees from each other’s organizations that consumer safeguards are severely compromised. Example: The FDA recruited Michael Taylor, a Monsanto attorney, to manage the creation of its GMO policy, a policy in effect today that empowers biotechnology companies to establish if their GMOs are nontoxic. Taylor then departed the FDA to become Monsanto’s vice president.

Since the introduction of GMOs in the 1990s rates of autism, allergies, obesity, cancer and assorted health issues have soared. There is no definitive proof indicting GMOs; nevertheless the biotechnology industry is circumventing labeling that would facilitate the necessary research. Why? Is there a stench here reminiscent of tobacco companies?

Independent research and case studies raise alarms worldwide. Many RR GMO crops have genes inserted into their DNA structure that manufactures an insect-killing toxin known as B
