Non-Toxic Disinfecting After the Flu

Make Your Own Eco-Friendly, Natural Disinfectant Solution:

  • 1/2 cup tea tree natural castille soap
  • 1 cup distilled water 1/2 tsp. borax powder
  • 1/2 tsp. tea tree oil

Combine all ingredients and shake bottle vigorously until powder dissolves. Spray surface and wait for one minute before wiping with a clean cloth.

More Disinfectants and Healthy Practices

Other disinfecting agents include hydrogen peroxide, ethanol (grain alcohol), isopropanol (rubbing alcohol), and household bleach (sodium hypochlorite). Most bleaches are hazardous if ingested or inhaled, can damage fabrics, and should be handled with care. To boost the disinfecting power of your natural disinfectant solution, wipe with one of these agents first and then use the solution detailed above.

While most flu germs are spread by air, some may be spread by contact with infected surfaces. Encouraging everyone in your home or business to wash their hands with soap and hot water frequently throughout the day will help reduce the spread of flu germs. Using non-antibacterial, natural disinfectants after an illness will help keep your environment healthy for everyone.

How are bleach and alcohol, non toxic? Please, be informed and be careful about the information you spread as a healthy alternative. I love your borax, tea tree recipe, but bleach?

Tea tree oil has a definite evergreenish odor, but a few drops of it in Sadie's shampoo and she is free of fleas without toxic drops or meds. It also contains a natural antibiotic that helps heal any scrapes, etc.

I will try the tea tree oil cleaning solution. Thanks.

also using essential oils in your water (vapouriser) is a good idea. Many essential oils have an antiseptic property. just a few drops, you will be amazed. You could start with tee tree or lavender.
Of course pure essential oils and preferably organic

I used garlic essential oil for this purpuse for some young cows who had pneumonia. It worked as it cleansed the air - not a great one for the home though as very pungent!

I use a product called Vital Oxide to disinfect my house. I buy it at vitaloxidedirect.com. I keep entering the same coupon code and I get free shipping (try prs2010...who knows?) It's really amazing stuff. They use it on a lot of the cruise lines now which, I guess, says something since they've had such problems with folks getting sick. It's completely non-toxic, so...
