After a long winter’s exposure to dry indoor heat, our hair needs some nourishing relief! Here’s the simple solution. This easy hair treatment will result in healthier, more manageable hair and a really clean, invigorated scalp. Olive oil nourishes, conditions, and improves the strength and elasticity of your hair, while the couldn’t-be-easier process is both stress-reducing and health-promoting.

Here’s how.

INGREDIENTS (enough for 1 or 2 treatments, depending on the length and thickness of your hair)

½ cup olive oil
5 drops frankincense essential oil (others may be substituted, if you wish)
1 plastic bag that can fit over your hair

1. Pour olive oil into a jar with a lid, then add essential oil. Put lid on jar and shake well to disperse the essential oil. Let sit for 24 hours in a cool, dark place. Shake again before use.

2. Rinse hair with warm water. Warm 1 tablespoon of oil treatment in the palms of your hands. Using your fingertips (not nails), gently massage the oil into the scalp in a circular motion. Repeat until the entire scalp has been massaged. Rub the ends of your hair with the remaining oil.

3. Place a plastic bag over your hair, secure by tying or with a hair clip or clothespin, and allow the oil to remain for at least a half-hour.

4. Rinse well, then shampoo as usual.

I meant to add to my post:

I have used coconut oil for years -- I am 60 years old and have waist-length bleached-blonde hair.

Coconut oil/butter is the best for hair, and actually cleanses. Whether fancy coconut butter or the glop from a can of Coconut milk, slather your hair and wrap...or just leave it. The longer the better. Shampoo or just rinse with 'hot' water over 100 degrees. Doesn't leave hair greasy feeling, but rather soft, glossy, and manageable. De-frizzes, and does NOT dry out hair like commercial conditioners.

i have tried this and found that the olive oil does not wash out with one good rinse so my hair was left for a couple of days really greasy feeling. i may try it again, though, on dry hair. anything for shiny, healthy hair ;-)

I am trying this remedy for first time right now, but can I leave olive oil on my hair and style?

Grea Alexander

I utilize my mixture on both wet and dry hair. Grease is too heavy for my hair and does nothing to actually improve the condition of it. Most premade hair oil blends don't moisturize my hair enough.

I am mixed and have a grade of hair 1/2 way between Caucasian and African hair. I utilize a spray made of 1/3 olive oil, 1/3 setting lotion and 1/3 liquid leave in conditioner every day before styling my hair. Since I have started, my hair has become very shiny and healthy without looking or feeling greasy. Even if I shampoo my hair and don't condition (pre-Henna), it still looks shiny and healthy. I've also noticed a decrease in breakage. It's one of the best hair discoveries I have made to date.

can i use bertolli extra light tasting olive oil for hair massage
