How to Repair Your Hair with Olive Oil

After a long winter’s exposure to dry indoor heat, our hair needs some nourishing relief! Here’s the simple solution. This easy hair treatment will result in healthier, more manageable hair and a really clean, invigorated scalp. Olive oil nourishes, conditions, and improves the strength and elasticity of your hair, while the couldn’t-be-easier process is both stress-reducing and health-promoting.
Here’s how.
INGREDIENTS (enough for 1 or 2 treatments, depending on the length and thickness of your hair)
˝ cup olive oil
5 drops frankincense essential oil (others may be substituted, if you wish)
1 plastic bag that can fit over your hair
1. Pour olive oil into a jar with a lid, then add essential oil. Put lid on jar and shake well to disperse the essential oil. Let sit for 24 hours in a cool, dark place. Shake again before use.
2. Rinse hair with warm water. Warm 1 tablespoon of oil treatment in the palms of your hands. Using your fingertips (not nails), gently massage the oil into the scalp in a circular motion. Repeat until the entire scalp has been massaged. Rub the ends of your hair with the remaining oil.
3. Place a plastic bag over your hair, secure by tying or with a hair clip or clothespin, and allow the oil to remain for at least a half-hour.
4. Rinse well, then shampoo as usual.

I tried this and it made my hair looking wet and WAY too moisturized for 2 days. Even after I washed it three times.

The olive oil works great! I also take biotin to prevent my hair from thinning and falling out. Thin hair runs in the family and after having weight loss surgery, I lost a lot of hair. The biotin really helps. Cheers!

Check out Mountain Rose Herbs.
Indians massage coconut oil into their scalp before shampooing, I think.
Also, not to sound too gloomy, but a lot of those commercial makeups kind of exist not to make your skin/hair better, but it's kind of like an endless cycle -- they say your skin/hair will be better in 30 days or something like that, then if it doesn't, you just switch to something else.... false advertising.
Making your own cosmetics is more fun!
P.S. I was using Vatika though. It made my hair pretty much smooth, shiny, easy to work with... but then I discovered that one of the ingredients, shikakai, is a toxin! Yikes! I was getting mixed messages -- my hair was looking great, but my skin felt all itchy from it.

I think it starts on the inside. Asians often eat lots of seaweed to strengthen hair.

What is actually making the real difference/improvement is the acidic nature of the olive oil. Hair is dead. Once it leaves the hair follicle very little can be done to improve its strength or structure. Damaging it is easy, any alkaline substance (hair dyes, bleaches, perms, even shampoo) will cause some, largely irrepairable damage. The most effective substance to help detangle hair, to improve its shine and smoothness (without making it lank and greasy) is citric acid. Buy as crystals from the brewing counter at a chemists, mix 1 teaspoon with an ounce of warm water and use as a rinse after shampooing. DO NOT OVERDOSE.
Oils, waxes and creams are merely pallatives. They (often) cost a lot of money, they coat the hair making it feel smother and adding shine but do NOTHING to the hair structure. Of course the cosmetic manufacturers will tell you different but..... Did you know that only 1%, yes that is 1%. of what you put on your skin is actually absorbed. The hair ( which is a specialised form of skin) is an even harder form of keratin which as an amino acid or protein CANNOT benefit from the addition of substances. Yes, olive oil, eggs, etc are good for the hair IF YOU EAT THEM.
