I travel all the time with my pooch. We are always prepared, we keep extra collars, leashes, bowls, water, etc. in the car.
When flying, do not make your pet go as cargo.....if they don't fit under the seat, find another way for them to go. I have heard too many horror stories about airlines losing dogs, them freezing to death, suffocating, etc.
