My gout was probably triggered by an almost fatal reaction to HCTZ as bloodwork until then did not show high uric acid levels. However, colchicine is not available to most of us because a company forced the FDA to take it off the market, they tested it on about 100 people, and then put the identical drug back on the market as Cholcrys...which is not covered by Medicare Plan D and many other drug companies. I am allergic to allopurinol so was switched to probecide and normally, after we got levels under 5, I took half a dose twice a day. If my toes start to ache, I kick up the dosage to 1 full and 1/2 pill a day or sometimes the normal dose of 1 twice a day.
