Quirky Animal Quiz

1. The little shrew looks harmless but it has a secret weapon. That secret weapon is: (B) Poisonous saliva. The little shrew uses this toxic saliva to kill prey much larger than themselves. Yes, they are carnivorous – and they often store their unlucky paralyzed prey in their burrows for later dining.

2. The elephant’s closest living relative is (C) the Rock Hyrax, but don’t tell that to Sesame Street’s Snuffaluffagus!

3. When a camel has been without water for days it can guzzle how many liters in under 10 minutes: (D) 100 liters. That is the equivalent of a human guzzling 20 liters in 10 minutes — which would lead to dangerous levels of water intoxication.

4. Most brands of lipstick contain: (A) Fish Scales. Sorry to gross you out, but at least it isn’t snail mucous! These fish scales however are charmingly referred to as “pearl essence” or pearlescence in the beauty industry. Pearlescence delivers that silvery shimmery quality that women so covet on their lips. Pearlesence is a byproduct of the commercial fishing process (mainly from herring) and thus one could say it is an upcycled product. And this little known fact most certainly adds a new dimension to the question “do fish have lips?”

5. Butterflies have taste buds in an unusual place, which is: (A) on their legs. This is why butterflies stand on their food — they are tasting it!

6. Killer Whales are found in all oceans of the world. True or False? True!

7. A gathering of geese on the ground is called a gaggle, but a group of geese in the air are called: (C) A Skein.

8. We all know spiders have eight legs, but how many knees do they usually have? (D) 48. That is eight legs with six joints (and seven segments) on each leg. That makes a lot of little knees for Mama spider to kiss if baby spider falls down. However, the term “knees” is really descriptive only, as “spider knees” bear no resemblance to human knees in terms of structure since spiders do not have bones, but rather exoskeletons. So, really the answer to this question depends on how you define “knee.” If you look at an anatomical drawing of a spider, only one segment per leg is actually called a “patella” while the other segments are referred to in surprisingly mammalian terms: Hip, femur, tibia, metatarsus, tarsus and tarsal claws (toenails).

9. A shark’s teeth on average are replaced every ____ days? (A) 7. Sharks unsurprisingly shed their teeth constantly, so it is essential for the teeth to grow back quickly. Shark teeth are typically in rows so when a tooth is lost, another tooth “spins” forward from the reservoir of back-up teeth. Over a lifetime, a shark can shed up to 35,000 teeth!

10. Which animal has three hearts? (B) Squid. For the record, they also have ten arms.
